WAGNER, JR. > ///// “ w; Nude Body of Girl, 6, And Halloween Garb Found in Cemetery By »h« Associated tf»u JOHNSTOWN, Pa., Oct. 29. The nude body of a 6-year-old girl—blood running from her mouth—was found in a cemetery early today hours after she dis appeared while playing Hal loween “trick or treat” games in her neighborhood at suburban Conemaugh. Conemaugh Police Chief George Fetsko identified the child as Karen Mauk. Earlier in the evening the little girl had been playing with a cousin, Paul Lindenberg, 6. But Mrs. Mauk said the child re turned home after that and then went out again. Snakeroot Drug Aids ' Hopelessly ' Insane Associated Burt*'' CHICAGO, Oct 29.—A re search team today reported “dramatic” and seemingly “In credible” results in beating “hopelessly” Insane patients with a new form of an old snakeroot remedy from India. They said the drug, reserpine, brought improvement in 80 per cent of the 74 “back ward” men tal hospital patients they treat ed. Eight have been discharged and 20 others have become so much better with continued use of the drug that they may be sent home on leaves of absence. Reserpipe also appeared to help mentally retarded patients. The doctors said reserpine should not be regarded as a “panacea in the treatment of the mentally ill and mentally retard ed.” However, il[ further studies bear out their results, they add ed, “reserpine will be the most important therapeutic develop ment in the history of psychi atry.” They said they expect lt to revolutionize present psychiatric treatment. This Indian plant hks been used for centuries in the treat ment of mental illness, insomnia, snake bite, anxiety states and other conditions. Lately, lt has been found effective in lowering blood pressure in hypertensive patients. / The team of American physi cians, Drs. Robert H. Noce and David B. Williams of Modesto. Calif., and Walter Rapaport of Sacramento, investigated reser pine because of recept enthusias tic reports from Lidia on its effectiveness in mental illness. They selected for their study only those mental patients at Modesto State Hospital with the poorest prospects for recovery. Three of the patients had re ceived over 100 electro-shock treatments with no lasting bene fits. Nine of them came from maximum security wards where many patients were secluded or restrained on occasion by strait Jackets. Writing in the Journal of the American Medical Association on results obtained with the drug, they said: “At present on the wards where patients are receiving i reserpine, seclusion, restraint of ■ all types, sedation and electro , convulsive therapy have been t almost eliminated. It seems ln i credible that a drug can re : place electro-convulsive therapy i in this manner, but apparently such a drug has been-found and we expect lt to revolutionize and I facilitate modem psychiatric . treatment.” The drug apparently acts on ' the hypothalamus, the seat of ’ emotional behavior in the brain. 1 The doctors said the drug not only exerts a tranquilizlng ac f tion but “we believe that a ro t organization of the personality ‘ is taking place in an amazing, • rapid, satisfactory manner.” - Arms Smugglers Seized [ RABAT, French Morocco, Oct.
