Magnificent Deer With Prize Antlers Thriving in Arizona Sy th# Associated Prats PHOENIX. ' Ariz., Nov. 3. High in a land of spectacular beauty, one of the Nation’s finest collections of big game animals Is thriving. The North Kaibab deer herd, living in an isolated pine and aspen forest, roams a range hemmed in by the Grand Canyon on the south and by arid desert on the other three sides. It is here, in a tightly circum scribed fragment of northern Arizona, that some of the most amazing mule deer antlers in the world can be found. What they lack in symmetry they make up in size. Racks stretching more than 46 inches from tip to tip have been taken, and those with more than a 30- inch spread are not unusual. Easily Obtained. They can be obtained with sur prising ease. Last year 85 per cent of the 8,000 sportsmen granted permits got their deer. This year 12,000 will try in the greatest hunt in the State’s history. Each will be permitted, as always, to kill a buck, doe or fawn. Game management experts are hoping they are all successful. For the prolific herd has been steadily increasing, despite greater hunting pressure each year and is about to eat itself out of a home. It now numbers about 25,000. As usual, hunting this year will be held in two stages, The first from October 13 to 24, and the second from November 19 to 28, both inclusive. When the hunting season is over in the area Theodore Roose velt set aside in 1906 as the Grand Canyon National Game Preserve the great bucks search for mates. Die of Starvation. In the clearings the males rear and plunge in battles for the does of their choice. Some times the fight ends in tragedy. The antlers lock and the deer die of starvation, unable to free themselves. The Kaibab mule deer is an animal of great beauty and strength Bucks are lean and muscular, weighing from 125 to 190 pounds, and are well nour ished. Does are somewhat smaller, but from the hunters’ standpoint, the meat of both is excellent. Above all, the huge, spreading antlers are the one characteristic that set the Kaibab buck in a unique category. The limestone content of the ground is believed to be re sponsible for these abnormal growths. It is drawn up into the fibers of the vegetation and be comes a part of the deer’s diet. What of the Kaibab herd’s future? It will be a bright one. Ari zona’s game authorities feel, if the herd’s size is kept within bounds. Named for the Job CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. UP). — Marine Pfc. Aussies Develop Way To Run Jet on Lignite MELBOURNE. Australian aircraft research workers in Mel bourne have developed a method of using Victorian brown coal to feed an industrial gas-turbine jet engine. The method enables the use of lignite lor factories, mills, and powerhouses. It could also be used in specially designed loco motives on the Victorian Rail ways. The researchers report that a brown-coal Jet equals a steam engine in efficiency and would be cheaper to operate and maintain.
