BUUVT CLOWN was a star of Hie 1950 parade

DUtM, WALT MRT was pressed into service. A gigantic
Mickey Mouse, and an even bigger Pluto the Pup and Horace
HonecoDar. built by Goodyear, are now standard fixtures of the
parade. And talk about inflation: it takes 75,000 cubic feet
of helium to make them presentable to their public!
For the 1954 parade there will be, besides the giant balloons.
13 bands, nine elaborate floats and an array of surprise stars.
Last year, such notables as Sid Caesar, Imogene Coca. Wally
Cox, Steve Allen and Eddie Fisher were in the line-up. Show
people fight for the privilege of participating. They get reams
of publicity and pictures and some of them find out far the
first time in years how nice it is to bask in the morning sun
shine.
It will take 56 minutes for the 1954 Parade to poes a
given spot. Six hundred and nineteen hide will lose their
gloves, 122 will lose their fathers and 416 fathers will lose
their tempers, ending their holiday morning by hollering
at their wives, “Next year you take them!”
THB LAST STRAW. Macy’s does not have to import talent
to give its Thanksgiving Day Parade the proper professional
flair. Jack Straus. President of the Macy Corporation, is just
as good a showman as he is a merchant. And another recent
addition to Macy’s board is actor-director Robert Montgomery.
Montgomery proved his value at the very first board
meeting he attended. An irate lady customer barged in
with a list of grievances a mile long. She settled happily
