April 4 {IP). — Steel Magazine predicted yes terday that the Nation's current | steel output—at 95 per cent ol rated capacity—is the highest , that can be expected for the year. The metalworking weekly said ; manufacturers would be using marginal facilities above that level, and such facilities would ' be used only in an emergency or when there is an assured long-time capacity, cases which do not exist at present. ' Steel cautioned against a dis torted view of current steel pro : duction and demand figures, and said “sane buying is still good practice.” Current demand is centered in the light, flat-rolled products, i principally cold-rolled carbon i sheets, the magazine said, re -1 porting that in January, 41.9 per j > cent of mill shipments of fin , ished steel were sheets and strip, 1 compared with 34.5 per cent dur- i ing all of 1954. The magazine reported some recent leveling off in sheet buy ! ing and said: “This isn't the result of de creased consumption. It stems . principally from extended book : ings: Consumers and producers are reluctant to commit them selves any . further ahead. But there should ne less incentive ; to order for third-quarter de ■ livery than there was in the first ' and second quarters. i Steel said that not only should , tne automobile industry iced 1 less- then, but so should many ' other consumers who will be j taking time out for summey va ■ caiions. Steel reported that the still ingot production rate quit ciimb ■ ing for the first time this, year. ! holding steady at 95 per cent of i rated capacity. Steel’s finished ; steel price composite was firm at; ; $118.23 a net ton, and its scrap : price composite moved down to; $37.41 a gross ton, from the pre i ceding week’s 37.75.
