Churchill to Be Host to Queen At 'Farewell' Dinner Tonight LONDON. April 4 UP). —Sir Winston Churchill made ready to entertain Queen Elizabeth II at dinner tonight, and most Britons believed it was the last time the 80-year-old statesman would be host to his young sov ereign as Britain’s Prime Min ister. Observers and members of Parliament generally expected the veteran Conservative chief to drive to Buckingham Palace to morrow or Wednesday and hand his resignation to the Queen. She is considered certain to sum mon Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden to take over the top post for which he has waited so long Tonight the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were to dine with Sir Winston and his wife at the Prime Minister’s official residence. No. 10 Downing street. The rarity of the occasion was viewed as still more evidence that the old man finally was stepping down. Anticipation of the changeover stirred a buzz of speculation about the date for the next gen eral election, which the new gov ernment chief must decide. Until this week end, October had been regarded as the most likely month. Talk was general in the lobbies of Parliament to day that the polling might take place May 26. There also were conflicting re ports about Sir Winston’s plans He is scheduled to fly to Sicily April 12 for a 16-day va cation. It has been indicated that when he returns, he will hold his membership in the House of Commons and sit on the back benches as an elder statesman. But this would be a delicate role for a man of such great prestige. Political observers agreed it might damage the Conserva tives’ election chances if Sir Stephens to Address Fairfax Democrats An affair that might well be billed as “Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinner—Part II” will be staged by the Fairfax County Demo cratic Committee at 7:30 p.m. April 16 in Hunting Towers, Alexandria. Lt. Gov. A. E. S. Stephens of Virginia will speak. Mr. Stephens, identified with the conservative Byrd organization in the party, is among those prominently mentioned as candi dates for Governor in 1957. Fairfax Democrats earlier had another potential gubernatorial candidate address them. Dele gate Robert Whitehead of Nelson County, leader of the anti-organization wing of the party, spoke to them on George Washington’s birthday. Chairman Guy M. Some members of Parliament think Sir Winston will make only infrequent visits to the House, or even accept a peerage and move to the House of Lords. The switch at the top of the government was expected to bring no upheaval in the make up of the rest of the cabinet. If Bir Anthony plans an early elec tion, he may make almost no changes and may even for a time should the double load of Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary. | “KONST WHICH I I BAD SITED | lj began to run short."
