DRIVI-IN SEKVICI: Washington: 1326-1346 Florida ave„ n. w. AKUnoton: 2330 Columbia Pika at $. Adams SL has been described as “the great est teacher of singing among composers, and the greatest com poser among teachers of sing ing.” The remark is brilliant, and it may be unjust. Porpora has to his credit the teaching of the caatrato Farinelli, a tenor of great reputation, universally considered unequalled by almost everyone who heard him and has left a record of his opinion. On the other hand, the sonata in G, played last night, published in 1754, Is a piece of great vitality and melodic charm. The flirt movement seems evidence that Porpora knew the Bach cha cone, written about 35 years earlier. The suite of Kurt Roger, a Washington composer, is a con trapuntal piece of good craft manship and of decided musical interest. The composer was present to acknowledge the warm applause of the audience. The comparative neglect of the Schumann A minor sonata Is a shame, for among the works of this composer, it is an excep tion to the trend that shows a falling-off of creative power in Schumann’s later years. The sonata is a rich and warm ro mantic piece of great beauty. After intermission, the Kreu- tzer Sonata. Beethoven’s famous double concerto without orches tra, was played with great brav ura on the part of both per formers. During the wonderful variations. remembrance of Tolstoy’s bitterness about this sonata, which seemed to the great writer an unjustifiable display of indecence, lead to the reflection that as men grow older they have ! very peculiar tastes.
