A-14 * THE EVENING STAR. Washington. D. C. Monday, span 11. IMIS THE PASSING SHOW Kazan's Wizard Touch Lights 'East of Eden' BY JAY CARMODY "East of Eden,” a John Steinbeck potboiler which became a best seller, now becomes a motion picture of genuine distinction, thanks to the magic of Elia Kazan’s direction. Kazan’s wizard touch, evident in every detail of the film now at the Metropolitan, stands out in two notable respects. For one of these, he has thrown away the first two thirds of Steinbeck’s fuzzy parable, and for the other he has found his usually perfect cast, this one headed by new comer James Dean apd Julie Harris. If “East of Eden” falls short of ’ greatness, and it does, this will i have to be attributed to the con- i fusion of Steinbeck’s original I narrative. That his modern re telling of the Cain and Abel story becomes a dramatic appeal for human understanding is the work of subsequent hands and hearts. The film is Kazan's first in Cinemascope, or big screen, and he uses it not merely for some striking new angles but keeps his colors keyed low to prevent distortion of his theme. Its tech nical aspects are virtues not to be overlooked in “East of Eden.” Almost inevitably the other pic ture makers must learn from Kazan that movies can be made more than merely bigger in the new processes. ** * * The screen version of "East of Eden” has much that is dra- j matic and perceptive to say on the holier-than-thou cruelty and blindness in the nature of hu mans. It is told, necessarily som berly, through the anguish of young Caleb Trask, a baffled boy in the Salinas (Calif.) vegetable belt in 1917. Caleb, puzzled that his righteous, kindly intentioned father prefers his brother, Aaron, desperately seeks an explana tion. He thinks he finds it in the discovery that his mother is not dead, but a bad woman who runs a brothel in neighboring Monterey. Now the lad has two things to rebel against, his father’s harsh puritanical judgments, and the even more unjust notion that he must be like his mother. To his chagrin, the first intimation of parental affection he gets comes from his presumably de graded mother who lends him $5,000 to help his bankrupt father. This financial help, the boy thinks, will prove his own love for his father and win the latter's for him. ** * * The labyrinth of misunder standing among the Trasks is Kazan’s dramatic meat, the kind on which he feeds to emerge a constant candidate for academy awards. * He has four superb characters with which to deal here, the best of these the rejected son Caleb, played by young Dean. This is a lad who wants desper ately to be loved, cannot under stand why he is not, and is both reckless and ingenious in his agonized fight against loneli ness. Under Kazan’s direction, Dean makes the role a brilliant first performance. He is in complete control of its every highly charged moment, the cruel need to face the truth about his mother and then to face the woman herself; the necessity to love his uncomprehending father if he is to have a shred of hope that the emotion will be re turned; and the lesser, but an guished problem, of what to do about his brother’s fiance. ** * * A young actor confronted by •uch a complex of desperate dilemmas needs both force and delicacy to deal with them. Dean, under Kazan’s guidance, has no trouble finding them. The Trask family’s tragedy of misunderstanding, set in the poignant frame of World War I’s passions, is acted with equal Grand Oprnintt 3"° DANCE STUDIO IN TMI WIWIMeTON MU UNQLEY NIK, Ml. wBKSnB »» Cinn. There is complete conviction in her every tensely pitched relationship with Father Adam Trask and his two so Cain and Abel-like sons, the latter played by Richard Davalos. The bitter, disillusioned role of the mother who fled the lads in their Infancy is deftly played by Jo Van Fleet and Raymond Massey is at his best as the puritanic father whose benevo lence becomes so savagely dis torted. Burl Ives, Albert Dekker and Harold Gordon are among the lesser characters who stand out in “East of Eden.” ♦* * * MONDAY MEMOS: The Capi tol Theater schedule will be sus pended tomorrow afternoon from 5 to 7:30 pm. to permit a special closed circuit telecast. . . .
