I THE EVENING STAR, Washington, D. C. ON THE AIR | 'Music Til Dawn' Has ? A Second Birthday BY HAKKY MaeARTHUR A radio program that may Just as well be called unique celebrated a birthday yesterday with the aid of a president’s ci tation from the National Federa tion of Muoic Clubs. ’’Music Til Dawn,” originated and spon sored by American Airlines, marked its second anniversary and started its third year on WTOP. There is every evidence of its increasing rather than dimin ishing popularity. It already is heard in six cities—New York, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles in addition to Washington—and the deal has just been, consummated to add Cincinnati’s powerful WLW to the list. “Music Til Dawn” attains its uniqueness in a number of ways. It is one radio program known to a number of televiewers, since it has little television competi tion. Broadcast in several cities, it still is not a network show, but a separate local enterprise in each. The reason for this is that it has gradually changed in character to match the audience, which varies from city to city. Washington, you will be happy to know, is a little more high brow than some cities where the program leans a little further from Beethoven in the direction of show tunes. ** * * Another definitely different aspect of “Music Til Dawn” is that it has the lowest pressure commercials in all broadcasting. American sees it as a builder of good will rather than as a ticket salesman. As evidence, it re cently dropped the telephone number from the local messages as being out of place. If listen ing to the program suddenly should make you want to fly to 1 Los Angeles, you’ll still have to look up the number. Roger Fleet, who was known to radio listeners as Norman Evans before he took over this chore, is in something of a unique position, too. There are not many who play records over the radio, at least, who have but one sponsor to worry about and have that sponsor delighted with the program. It is hard for an advertiser to measure any direct results from an undertaking such as "Music ’Til Dawn.” but there are indications here and there. People are always coming up to the window to buy tickets and thanking American for that fine music. Some other signs have been noted, too. An airline em ploye has discovered, for in stance, a cab driver in Chicago who listens to “Music ’Til Dawn” out there and who politely in vites any fare who asks him to turn the radio off to seek other transportation. ** * * Since the idea is to gear the program to the community ; where it is broadcast, music 1 selection is a local matter, too, at least so far as Washington j is concerned. WTOP music librarian, is cred ited with doing the Job excel lently for him by Mr. Evans or Mr. Fleet The origin of that Roger Fleet name, incidentally, might as well be taken care of right now. The connection oi Roger and aviation should be obvious; the Fleet is Just a shade more subtle. It’s sup Dosed to suggest American Airlines’ Flagship , Fleet. Anyhow. ’ Mr. Evans-Fleet is happy with his fob. even if his i hours do have the whole world out of step but him. He likes good music and he contends that it doesn’t need extravagant ex plaining over the air. Exposure, he feels, is all that is necessary to make classical music in a sense popular music. ** * * He reports, for example, the case of one of his engineers. A country ahd Western music man himself, the engineer didn't think anuch of all this highbrow stuff. Mr. Fleet (or Mr. Evans) passed him the other day, heard him whistling and was delighted 1 q tell him that he was whistling a Bach violin concerto theme. Due to the hour that it is on the air, WTOP’s "Music Til , Dawn” is heard considerably afield. It has regular listeners from New England to Florida and listeners at Land’s End, England, have reported it boom ing in there. Mr. Evans is not disturbed by the thought that this, due to the time difference, makes him a morning man for the British. He doesn’t know, either, whether this culture on the air in the early morn is fooling the British about us.
