Father Poisons Children,
Takes Fatal Dose Himself
DETROIT. April 16 (JP). A j
young father killed himself and ]
his two young children with poi
son yesterday when he learned
his wife planned to divorce him.
One of the children was a 2-
year-old son whose kidnaping
two yean ago brought his
estranged parents together.
Police said William Vanaman,
24, gave water laced with cya
nide to his daughter, Sharon, 1,
and son, William, jr„ before
taking the mixture himself.
The Vanaman boy was the ob

in 1953 when he was kidnaped
from a St. Louis hotel room by a
woman his mother had hired as
a baby sitter. The baby sitter,
Mrs. Joanne Elizabeth Strick
land. and a male companion
were seized with the child a
month later in Tampa, Fla.
Mrs. Strickland was charged

eral years ago to finance produc
ers and exporters of products
valuable to Iran’s foreign trade.
Premier Ala took over the gov
ernment last week with a single
clause program, a pledge to fieht
immorality and corruption in the
government and its agencies.
The new Premier, now in Eu
rope for medical treatment, suc
ceeded Gen. Fazollah Zahedi,
who retired because of ill health
after conducting a successful
campaign to suppress commu
nism and restore internal stabil
ity. Gen. Zahedi was criticized,
however, for condoning official
malpractices. He had appointed
Moghadam, a close friend, to
head the bank.
The Ala government already
has fired Teheran’s mayor and
a number of government em
ployes. It had promised further
drastic measures to clean up the
administration.
Tax Men Given
Tips by Jurist
WILLIAMSBURG. Va„ April
16 (ff).—Judge E. Barrett Pretty
man of the U. S. Appeals Court
for the District of Columbia
told a tax conference here yes
terday that when law enforce
ment fails to cultivate volun
tary observance, the law is “first
laughed at, then scoffed at,
then disregarded, and finally
destroyed.”
The jurist told some 50 tax
officials, taking part in the con
ference in connection with the
John Marshal bicentennial pro
gram, that the income tax law
applies to the great mass of
people in their everyday life and
depends for its existence on
mass, observation.
Soynd enforcement policies
can achieve this observance, he
declared.
“To perpetuate mass observ
ance of a law which applies to
people generally,” he said, “the
objectives and pattern of law
enforcement must be to treat
the outlaw with rugged finality,
the adventurous trespasser with
expensive impositions, and to
treat with firmness, fairness,
courtesy and simplicity the or
dinary fellow who by mistake or
mishap strays across permissible
bounds.”

Ruling Waited
By Greenspun
LAS VEGAS, Nev., April 16
i (ff).—Federal Judge John R.
Ross will rule today on a motion
for an acquittal of Publisher-
Columnist Hank Greenspun.
One of Mr. Greenspun’s attor
neys abruptly moved for a Judg
ment of acquittal yesterday.
Mr. Greenspun is being tried on
a Federal charge of mailing mat
ter tending to Incite assassina
tion of Senator McCarthy, Re
publican, of Wisconsin.
Attorney Edward P. Morgan of
Washington, D. C., argued that
the Government had failed to
prove a criminal offense had
been committed or that Mr.
Greenspun had written his ar
ticle about Senator McCarthy
with criminal Intent.
Judge Ross dismissed the jury
from the courtroom, heard argu
ments on the motion and said
he would rule today.
The prosecution surprised the
courtroom yesterday by resting
its case after presenting only
two witnesses. United States
District Attorney Madison B.
Graves told newsmen that he
was satisfied he had shown that
Mr. Greenspun was the author
of the column which caused the
publisher’s indictment. He said
he had also shown that the Jan
uary 8 issue of the Las Vega*
Sun. in which It appeared, had
been mailed.
“The matter of intent Is up to
the jury,” he said.
The Greenspun column said in
part: “McCarthy has to come to
a violent end. Huey Long’s
death will be serene and peace
ful compared with the demise of
the sadistic bum from Wiscon
sin.”
