Auto Trade Up Sharply
From 1954 in Quarter

Washinngton sales of both
new and used cars during the
first three months of 1955
jumped sharply above a year
earlier, data from the Traffic
Bureau disclosed today.
New-car titles, indicator of
new-car sales, totalled 7,942 in
the three months, compared
with 5.490 a year earlier. It was
the highest postwar total for
the period, except for 8.669 in
1951.
New-car titles in March rose
to 4,069 from 1,657 in the pre
vious month and 2,952 in March
last year.
Title transfers, barometer of
Used-car sales totaled 15.553 in
three months, compared with
14,426 in the same 1954 period,
and were at the highest mark
for the period since the war.
March title transfers totaled
9.609, compared with 2,436 in
the previous month and 8,911
in March, 1954.
Slated for HLBB
John H. Randolph, president
of the First Federal Savings and
Loan Association at Richmond,
Va„ and a popular figure among
savings and loan leaders here,
will become the third member of
the Home Loan Bank Board, it
is understood.
His appointment by President
Eisenhower will be announced
in the near future, it was learned
from reliable sources, today.
Mr. Randolph, a life-long Dem
ocrat, has been active in the
United States Saving and Loan
League for many years and has
served on a number of its com
mittees." including the important
Legislative Committee, 6f which
he has been vice chairman in
the last year.
Walter McAllister, chairman
of the Home Loan Bank Board,
and Ira A. Dixon, the other mem
ber, are both Republicans.
Reach New High
Preferred shares of Woodward

change today.
The latest price, listed on a
10-share transaction, also
equaled the 1954 high.
A three-share transaction in
Riggs National Bank stock at
8435 a share was the first re
corded this year. It closed 1954
at 5430.
