Baby Found Unharmed, Wasn't Stolen by Bear LIBBY, Mont., July 5 </P). Found unharmed In a wooded hollow, little Ida Mae Curtis bounded to her fathers arms with a cheerful “Hi, Daddy” late yesterday after she was lost for 22 hours In a rugged mountain area south of here. Searchers found the 2-year-old girl only 300 yards from where •he disappeared Sunday evening. Fearful that his daughter might have been carried from their tent by one of several bears seen in the vicinity, Mortimer i Curtis, the child’s father, broke i down and cried as he embraced ji her. Mrs. Curtis, mother of seven I •aid she saw two bear* near the ( camp where Mr. Curtis works as a logger shortly after Ida Mae j vanished. The proposal would take the dairy industry from under Fed eral’control and put its market ing and production curbs under a committee composed of indus try members. Mr. Benson has advised Mr. Westland he is opposed to the bill. Urging the Secretary to re consider, Mr. Westland said in a letter he made public: "I believe the American peo ple are becoming weary of pay-1 ing taxes to keep in effect sub sidy programs that aren't getting the job done. Consumer prices aren't falling, dairy income isn’t holding up and surpluses loom like a leaning tower over the future of the industry.” Mr. Westland said Mr. Ben son in 1953 had urged the dairy Industry to develop its own pro gram to support prices, handle surpluses and control production. He said the self-help program represents the views of a ma jority of dairy men as the way to accomplish that goal. Replying to Mr. Benson’s cri ticism that the bill would give the dairymen’s committee au thority to act without the ap proval of producers, Mr. West land said that, inasmuch as the dairymen themselves would choose the board, there would be no need for referendum* on Its decisions. Neither, the Congressman said, would the board bypass the Sec retary of Agriculture in making Its decisions, as Mr. Benson said he feared. -*• 9mus mrm-~ MCRIPIAM -HILL. ««* I »v- noi-64. *— u*4bl OM,'H+ur-AU. Mrs. Curtis, who remained at a cabin during the search oper ation, sobbed, “I think the bear got her.” Then, when told her daughter was safe, she cried: "Thank God! live been praying all day.” The mother had said bears ' bothered them at their moun ■ tain camp and stole food Satur ■ day. She said she chased an other of the animals from near I the camp Sunday, within an ! hour of the child’s disappear - ■ ance. I Job Problem .. . I Outgrow your job? Doionrt moro money? Y, Author Asks Congress If Book Is Barred By L. EDGAR PRINA Emily Davie, whose source history, “Profile of America,” has been the center of a Capitol Hill controversy, today sought a direct answer from Congress as to whether it has banned her book for Government distribu tion abroad. In telegrams to Senate-House conferees who agreed, indirectly, to deny the United State In formation Agency $225,000 it re quested to purchase and hand out 300,000 copies overseas. Miss Davie said: “Since no mention is made of “Profile of America” in the final version of HR 5502, I interpret this to mean there is no ban on the book and the USIA may use it in their program. Asks Meaning of Peril “However, Mr. Rooney’s state ment (to a reporter) . . . says: •The USIA at its peril, that is, subject to congressional criti cism, can buy whatever books it wants.’ "I would appreciate a spe cific clarification of this: What is meant by ‘peril’ and is there or is there not a ban on ‘Pro file’?” Representative Rooney, Dem ocrat of New York, is chairman of a House Appropriations sub committee which handles USIA money requests. Executive agen cies normally are extremely sensitive to the wishes of Ap propriations chairmen. Miss Davie said she under stands that although the Senate voted a bill which specifically stated that the money requested by USIA was “to be used for presentation of American books including "Profile of America,” Senate conferees bowed without an argument to the wishes of Mr. Rooney. Trip Abroad Called Off The author, a New Yorker, told The Star that she canceled passage for a trip abroad last j week end so she could "see this | thing through." She said the 1 ! question is not simply whether her book should be sent overseas !by the Government, but whether we are to tolerate “personal bookburners.” ! Several legislators criticized certain passages and photographs in “Profile.” Among the critics, besides Mr. Rooney, were Senator Kilgore, Democrat, of West Vir ginia. and Representative Bow, Republican, of Ohio. The Sen ator later reversed himself and promised to fight for the book in conference. A photograph of a little red schoolhouse was found objec tionable because it might cause the Russians to think that it represented our present-day school system. And a passage from Thoreau’s “Walden” begin ning "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation” was con sidered to be "damaging.” Fireworks Start Fire OAKLAND, Calif..
