The ocelot, or “large American

where from Texas to Patagonia.

ently. on the ground of the Naval
Observatory.
At least, the ocelot is still
missing, unobserved.
Last night marked the second
night effort by police to return
the cat to Addell's Pet Shop.
2319 Wisconsin avenue N.W.,
failed. Monday night police at
least saw the ocelot and fired
a couple of shots in his direction
Last night, aided by two teth
ered chickens outside the pet
shop and armed with shotguns,
police saw nothing in the way of
ocelots only two tethered
chickens.

Housewife Quits Attempt
To Swim Icy Strait
VICTORIA. British Columbia,
July 6 M*).—A 36-year-old Van
couver housewife’s attempt to
come back in competitive swim
ming ended abruptly today when
she was pulled from the water
61 minutes after challenging the
unconquered strait of Juan de
Fuca.
Mrs. Ann Mundigel Meraw. a
distance swimmer of note in the
19305, waved gaily to 200 well
wishers as she plunged into the
18.3-mile stretch of icy. tide
swept water between Victoria and
Port Angeles, Wash.
After covering about a mile,
■he became ill—apparently from
swallowing water in the choppy
sea—and was hauled out.
It was the 12th time a swim
mer had tried and failed to lick
the strait. Channel veteran
Florence Chadwick was the first,
last year. She quit after cover
ing less than live miles in as
many hours.

Miss Massey wound up a three
year tour of duty with the World

, She drove a 1952 10-horse
, power British coupe. An Indian
guide helped her over the tricky

. through India and Pakistan.
From there, her route took her
. to Iran. Iraq. Jordan, Lebanon,
Syria, Turkey, Greece, Yugosla
via, Italy, Switzerland and
France.

Armored Center at Fort Knox.

of allied land forces In South

He will succeed Lt. Gen. Paul
W. Kendall who is retiring.
The White House also said
President Eisenhower had nom
inated Gen. Read for promotion
to lieutenant general while serv
ing in the European post.
The President also nominated
Rear Admiral Maurice E. Curtis
for .promotion to vice admiral
while sowing as deputy com
mander in chief and chief of
staff. Pacific fleet.-He is now
commander of the cruiser-de
stroy A' force. Pacific fleet. The
present chief of staff of the fleet
is Rear Admiral Herbert G. Hop
wood.
