Man Indicted
In Deed Deal
A man was Indicted yesterday
on a charge of getting a woman
to deed property to him last
October by falsely representing
to her that a $30,000 note he gave
her was backed by deeds of trust.
The defendant is Robert H.
Johnson, 58, of the 1200 block of
L street N.W., who allegedly
owned a now defunct mortgage
company. The Indictment
charges him with false pretenses.
The woman complainant is
Mary Osin, of the 1500 block of
Meridian place N.W. The prop
erty Involved is in the 1200 block
of L street N.W.
Larceny by Trick
' A woman and a girl were in
dicted on a charge of grand lar
ceny of $5,000 from a woman
here in November, 1953, through
the pocketbook trick.
The two accused are Constance
J. Ballard, 24, reported arrested
in Chicage, and Barbara Spen
cer, 18, arrested in New York,
according to police. The two
disappeared, police said, after
the victim, Mrs. Julia D. Faulk
ner. of the 800 block of D street
N.E., had drawn money from a
bank and turned it over to one
of them to “show good faith” in
order to share a reported find of
$6,000.
Ramona E Foster, 26, colored,
was indicted on a charge of
second-degree murder, accusing
Ser of fatally stabbing another
oman last month during an
altercation in a house where the
two lived in the 1300 block of
Columbia road N.W. The vic
tim was Florence Peace, 41,
colored.
Robert W. R. Baker, Jr., 37,
of Cumberland, Md„ was in
dicted on charges of breaking
into a house in the 1600 block
of Missouri avenue N.W., last
May and stealing property valued
at more than $1,300.
Sarah Boyd, 25, colored, of
the 900 block of Sixth street
N.E., was Indicted on robbery
charges accusing her of picking
three women’s handbags of a
total of $74.
The grand Jury ignored sex
charges against three men. The
three, who were exonerated by
the grand jury ignoring the
charges, are Wert A. Stinson, 30,
of the 1900 block of C street
N.E.; Chester Whitman, 28,
colored, of the 1500 block of
Marion street N.W., and Anthony
Taska, 35, of the 2900 block of
Second street S.E.
Missiles Pioneer
Now Aiding U. S.
Prof. Harmonn Oberth, widely
known German rocket pio
neer, has arrived in this
country to work on guided mis
siles for the Army Ordnance
Corps at Redstone Arsenal,
Huntsville, Ala.
There he will work with up
wards of 100 other German
rocket scientists and specialists,
most of whom have become
American citizens within the
past year.
Among these is Dr. Weraher
Von Braun, director of the
Guided Missiles Development
Division at Redstone, who has
had high praise for Prof.
Oberth as being the “dean of
the International Aeronautical
Federation, a world-wide com
munity of space flight protag
gonlsts.”
Prof. Oberth, 61, is a
native of Romania. He did
supporting research work for the
development of the German V-2
rocket.
48th Infantry
To Be Armored
The 48th Infantry Division in
Georgia and Florida will be con
verted to an armored division,
the National Guard Bureau an
nounced today.
The conversion will be the
fourth such changeover in a
year and brings to six the num
ber of Guard armored divisions.
The Guard has 22 infantry divi
sions
Maj Gen. Joseph B. Fraser of
Hinesviile Ga., will continue to
command the 48th Division with
headquarters at Macon, Ga.
Theodore Roosevelt
Centennial Bill Voted
Legislation establishing a com
mission to celebrate the 100th
birthday anniversary of former
President Theodore Roosevelt in
1958, including the development
of Theodore Roosevelt Island in
the Potomac River, was passed by
the House yesterday and sent
to the Senate.
The resolution would author
ize an appropriation not to ex
ceed SIO,OOO to prepare such a
program. ,
