A-18 THE EVENING STAR, Washington, D. C. IWMBH. AUGUST 4, IMS Shipboard Ceremony Set For Burke Oath-Tgking By JOHN A. GILES Admiral Arleigh A. Burke wants the public to know that he will be taking over a lighting command when he becomes Chief of Naval Operations. That is the reason he is travel ing to Norfolk, Va., August 1? to be sworn in as the sea arm’s top onicer in a ceremony aboard the aircraft carrier Ticonderoga. It will be the first time that a Chief of Naval Operations has ever taken the oath of office aboard a ship. In the past such oath-takings have been simple little affairs in Pentagon offices. But Admiral Burke and other top officers have become con cerned lest the public, especially in places like Washington, tend to forget that the largest portion Your dog—lik>f yourself and your family needs a nutritionally sound diet PROTEIN for energy FAT for good digestion VU/TivrMWull I VITAMINS and MINERALS if A*-* “ illii I for sound healthy growth plus an all meat product that doga (and cats) find delicious! Car ney, now Operations chief, will arrive aboard the flattop at a Norfolk Navy Yard dock amid ruffles and flourishes. The plan 1 calls for “full honors’’ to be < rendered him. i Next Secretary of the Navy Thomas will board the warship < and the honors will be repeated. Finally Admiral Burke will climb aboard and the sailors again will: snap to attention and render l the same honors. Mr. Thomas then will speak. Admiral Carney will, order the \ flag captain to haul down the l flag which has signified that he i is chief of operations for the f last two years. A 17-gun salute £ will honor him. Rear Admiral Ira H. Nunn, * Navy Judge Advocate General, c will step forward and administer s the oath to Admiral Burke, who 4 vaulted over some 90-odd sen- J ior flag officers to get the post. c 17-Gun Salute Admiral Burke will make some 1 “appropriate remarks,” read his * orders to the assemblage and tell Admiral' Carney he Is relieving j him of his post. Then he will report to the Secretary ‘Tor duty and direct the flag captain to break (hoist) his flag,” a plan of - the - day states. Seventeen guns will be fired in his honor 1 and fast jet planes will roar overhead. Admiral Carney will be the; first to depart. He will be fol-j lowed by Mr. Thomas, who will; be honored by a 19-gun salute. Admiral Burke will be last down 1 the gangplank. The “full honors” which opened the ceremony will be repeated at the end. Invitations to attend have been sent to hundreds of top civilian and military officials. , The ceremony will herald a sweeping rejuvenation and re organization of the Navy’s high command. Civilian officials are said to be determined to replace the top brass with younger offi cers who they feel can more readily cut away from past tra ditions and lead the Navy In taking bolder and longer steps into the atomic age. ■lj^jliw - 1 RASPBERRY jelly .
