J.—Misty Morn (left) carries Eddie Arcaro to his fifth Monmouth Oaks victory, but both jockey and filly knew they were in a horse race. Blue Sparkler (right), ridden by Glen Lasswell, gave the favored Misty Morn a battle down the stretch, losing the $61,800 race for 3-year-old fillies by a neck. Blue Sparkler, the pacesetter, had a lead of six lengths over Misty Morn with three quarters of a mile to go in the mile-and an-eighth test. Manotick was third—AP Wirephoto. (Story on Page C-l.) The polyglot population of (Singapore and Malaya—the Ma lays, Indians, Ceylonese. Eu rasians and the Chinese—are crazy about the races Track owners are fighting to open courses to all the public. Now the only ones who can at tend must be members of the , I turf club, and the membership ,jis limited. All races are run on the turf. There’s no proper starting gate, no padded stalls and electrically : controlled systems to see that i the horses get off on an even . start. The starter lets the horses ;go when he thinks they’re more or less close up against the elas tic barrier. ! Payoffs are slow, and for any one collecting as much as SI,OOO it’s a long wait until a hurry-up note for more money is sent tQ ; the head cashier. 11 When a horse is entered in America, the racing program f shows he has a numbered post . position. In Malaya you never . know what it is until 10 minutes > or so before the starting *ime. There’s no such thing as de -3 tailed past performance form and chart sheets. But form . means virtually nothing in this » country. j About 60(1 race horses are in Malaya, most of them bought in . England. Ireland, Australia and , Prance. Englishmen. Chinese and Ma t lays make up the jockeys list. 3 They get SSO (sl7. United s States) per ride. First Aid Wins by Neck In Betless Saratoga Race SARATOGA SPRINGS. N. Y.. Aug. 6 (&)■—Brookmeade Stable’s First Aid and Greentree Stable's Divine Board put on a rousing duel down the stretch today in the $25,600 Whitney Stakes with First Aid winning by a neck Jockey Hedley Woodhouse sent First Aid to the front with a fur long to go in the* betless mile and a furlong race, and it was a ding dong battle all the rest of the way. Diving Board, who had held the lead earlier, tried hard under! the urging of Ted Atkinson, but just couldn’t catch the leader. Foxcatcher Farm’s Chevation. the pre-race favorite, got off to a bad start and never got closer than six lengths. He trailed by nine at the end. The handicapper really called the turn on this 28th running of the Whitney, for he gave both the leaders 113 pounds. Cheva tion was the highweight with 120.
