Ptepto-Bismol -**<"•**»> ON THE AIR Louis Allen Joins WMAL Staff Aug. 21 By BERNIE HARRISON The best possible weather item of the month, short of the arrival, by rockets, of an Arctic cold front, is the return of Louis Allen to our local screens. The former WTOP-9 weatherman joins the WMAL-7 roster Sunday, August 21, and his first show, at 11:10, will ran for 10 minutes. And two daily Monday through Friday weather programs are in the planning stage. It goes without saying that Allen's intelligent estimates of the weather situation have been sorely missed since his departure from WTOP. A graduate me teorologist, oceanographer, lec turer and author. Allen brings authority ks well as showman ship to the field. I like that 10-minute opener, too. When the weather is page one news, as it has been through record-breaking July, a three minute period that, like as not, includes a commercial, a fashion show, or remarks by a dog, is somewhat less than adequate TV’s inflexibility in this re -1 speck is notorious. There should be no excuse for that around 11 p.m., when the local stations are generally on their own. Anyway it looks as if Louis won't have to race his motor to rfeet in all the weather news. And it further appears as if he got precisely the ideal he wanted from WMAL, for which his legion' of lans can be grateful. Prediction for his Smooth sailing. Storm signals out on other channels. Outlook —favorable. a* a * I made a beauty of a blunder last week. Paramount invited me to chaperone Carlene Kay Cook- Channel Chuckles I $1 I: STMS..J “Thit, madam, it ‘Pay-or you-DON’T - Saa T alavition.’ ” man of the 1400 block Belmont ' street, the local finalist in Shel lah Graham’s TV contest, to. Hollywood and Las Vegas for four days. The contest. I was informed, was to find the girl with the legs most resembling Rosalind Russell's. Carlene was one of 12 finalists, j Well, I turned it down Couldn't see what It had to do with TV. other than the con test was held on Sheilah's pro gram. There wasn’t enough advance notice, either, I explained to Carlene on the phone. When it was too late and Car lene was on her way. by plane, I finally saw her pictures, one Qf which adorns this page. Rue, rue, rue. aa a a There was a lot of excitement jin town last week over a novel jproposltion, Informally submitted to the FCC. on the question of juHF stations. In brief, the proposition, ex j plained by John H. Mullaney, consulting engineer, outlined a plan that could be adopted with out rule making which would , temporarily solve the dilemma of stations attempting to operate in the UHF belt. «All Washlng ! ton stations are in the VHF band). It is Mullaney's contention that 200 more stations could be accommodated on VHF, without interfering with any of the exist ing stations! So the failing UHF stations would simply shift to VHF. The commission, of course, is now faced with the problem of de-intermixture and It is doubt ful if it could get around to Mul laney’s plan, which was pre isented by the law firm of Welch, Mott and Morgan, until Septem ber. It is an attractive idea at any rate, provided that it checks out scientifically. *a a * How would it apply to the Washington area? Unfortunately, we would get only one more VHF station, and since there are a number of groups interested in going on the air, there would be a terrific ! fight before the FCC. Welch, Mott and Morgan got into this because of the plight 'SjEmiara -6700 • SERVING NEARIY VA.-MD &DC 53.00 HOME SERVICE CHARGE ■ MEM i Silver Spring’s Largest and Most Modorn 3-Day Dalivary Service DRY GLEANING LAUNDRY 1220 (aaarfia A«o. iU. *-4050 i : ; i ' . of one of their clients, Robert Rounsaville, who was unable to make a go of the UHF station ; in Atlanta. He just couldn’t sell the idea of converters to either i the public or dealers. In attempting to find a solu tion. Engineer Mullaney realised that the answer was equally ap i plicable to other areas of the ■ country. So it'* up to the. FCC to take the initiative now. aa * * Quickie Review: Despite some i atrocious performances by Bob .
