Champ Tests Racer Today on Derby Course By STEED EVANS Star Staff Correspondent AKRON, Ohio, Aug. 12.—His head still ringing from the wel coming blasts of a brass band and police sirens, Donald Duvall, Washington’s 1955 Soap Box Derby champion, today will get down to the business of racing. He and 153 other boys will test drive their cars down the cham pionship course in a preview of Sunday’s big race. It will be the first time Donald has seen his car since he won the Washington race on July 10. The car has been painted yellow and brown, and, according to some inspectors at the track, it “looks like a going thing.” The car is a close copy of the one Johnny Moore, jr„ drove to 10th place at Akron two years ago. Donald has added a few touches, like a set of wooden springs. Heat Competitors Chosen When he takes the wheel for the real thing on Sunday, he’ll be racing in his first heat against two boys from Panama City, Fla., and Jackson City, Mo. Prizes in the big race consist of (15,000 in college scholarships for the first five winners, motion picture camera equipment, a television set, power tools and a tape recorder. Donald flew from National Airport to Pittsburgh yesterday aboard a Capital Airlines Vis count, and from Pittsburgh to Akron, aboard a DC-3. About the only time he saw the ground was when he put his feet on it.! The weather closed in on both flights as soon as he was aloft. A cotton-thick mist broke only when the DC-3 approached the Canton-Akron Airport. Flies With Champions Aboard with Donald and his father, William A. Duvall of 1238 Pennsylvania avenue S.E., were Sammy Boyer, 15-year-old champion from Frederick, Md„ and Jerry Canaday, 12-year-old champion from Fredericksburg, Va. Jimmie Washington, 14- year-old entrant from Hager stown, was to arrive at Akron later. The Washington champ’s mother, his 11-year-old sister,; Sandra, and brother. Bill, 18. and seven other members of the family and friends are due to arrive here today and tomorrow. By Sunday, more than 34 rela tives and friends from Wash ington. Virginia and Maryland will be in the stands to watch • Donald race. As soon as Donald arrived yes- : terday, he was hustled off to, Derby Town, a YMCA camp located on a lakeshore several miles out of Akron. There he will be visited by celebrities Dinah Shore and her husband, George Montgomery; movie star Jon Hall, Indianapolis speedway winner Bob Sweikert and Otto Graham of the Cleveland; Browns football team.
