M. DERWIN An unanchored roof that “took off” under pressure from a hur ricane. resulting in a million dollar damage to the industrial plant It formerly covered, caused the largest single hurricane loss of the year. * Hurricanes Carol, Edna and Hazel, with their combined ca pers, piled up terrific losses and put windstorm damages ahead of fire damage. With these hurricanes cutting new and bigger swathes in the ; Nation, insurance companies are showing increasing interest in construction features designed ' to make residences and indus trial buildings more resistant to ' windstorms. Now being marketed, after considerable engineering and re search, is a specially designed framing anchor which ties roofs down more securely against wind uplift. It provides stronger, more economical nailed joint in wood framing of roofs, ceilings, walls and floors. A distinct advantage of these framing anchors is that they eliminate toe-nailing with all its uncertainties and weaknesses. For instance, a survey of 1.000 wind-damaged structures showed that toe-nailing rafters to plates and studs to sills and plates, was entirely inadequate to withstand excessive wind pressures and suctions that lift roofs and twist their supporting frames. The research organization of the manufacturers does not claim that these framing an chors will keep a structure intact against any and all wind forces, yet it claims azpple evidence that they provide stronger, more; irigid nailed joints that tie a structure together with greater! resistance to forces from any or all three directions. Effectiveness of proper roof anchorage was evidenced at Wal tham. Mass., during the hurri cane season, where a roof was died down on the south side with framing anchors and on the north side by conventional toe-nailing. Last summer, when Hurricane Carol blew up from the South, she had no effect on the roof. However, when Hur ricane Edna came in from the Mil 111 IHi I HI H ' MIMMMMIIIHIIIMMViIM MM M 111111, ~, ~ |. .... .i|. 1 ..|M 1 .1.,|.j discussed on Page B-l. You’ll notice that living area is placed on upper floor. | North, she got under the eaves, separated the toe-nailed rafters from.the plate on the north side, and deposited the roof upside down on nearby railroad tracks. With the roof went the south; wall’s plate, still held securely to the rafters by framing anchors. Had the entire roof been tied down with these anchors, it might not have been dislodged. These framing anchors are made of 18-gauge, zinc-coated sheet steel in three basic styles, with a left and right of each for quick and easy application. l They come packed with special nails, and require only a hammer to install. Special Floor Enamel A new floor and porch enamel, for use only on floor surfaces ex posed to excessive walk and wear, has just been announced. This new enamel, formulated to resist the daily onslaught of heavy foot traffic, according to the manu facturer is able to cover solidly all marred and scratched floor surfaces. Its chemical formula tion leaves floor surfaces highly resistant to foot scuffing, the maker claims. Easy to apply, the enamel cov ers without brush or lap marks,! drying in four hours. Now avail able In nine colors, as well as black and white, it is simple to keep clean. Ordinary soap and water is all that's required to wipe dirt off. For use both indoors and out. 1 one gallon can cover more than 600 square feet solidly. For further information, write Mr. Derwin, Room 720, The Eve ning Star. Washington. D. Application of this color stain is pretty much the same as for the first clear coat. Simply mix well and brush to the desired depth of color. When the color coat is dry, sand with a very fine paper.
