B-12 ** THE EVENING STAR, Washington, D. C. MONPAY. AUGUST IS. 19.53 v THE PASSING SHOW Martin-Lewis Set Won By Shirley MacLaine By HARRY MacARTHUR Shirley MacLaine. the pert Arlington (Va.) lass who seems destined to make her mark in the movies, has just passed another test. She aiready has been marked as a girl with a bright future by such film-fabricators as Producer Hal Walls and Director Alfred Hitchcock. Now she has repaid this faith by managing to stand out in a Martin-and-Lewis pic ture. where many a girl before her has been submerged in the slapstick. The film is “Artists and Mod els.” According to work from! the West Coast, the pixie-like Miss MacLaine has somewhat bowled over preview audiences. Approximately one-third of those filling out preview cards listed her as their favorite performer in the film. Some of them dldj not recall her name. She was listed variously as “that girl who 1 danced." “the comedienne.” “the; girl singer,” and “the dimpled girl with the short hair.” But they remembered her. Sampling a true cross-section of the populace, of course, un-; doubtedly would produce a high er pro-MacLaine, anti-Martin and-Lewis ratio. These, how-! ever, presumably were ardent I devotees of the most famous | feudists of 1955 or thev wouldn't i have been in the same theater; with “Artists and Models' in! the first place. The girl who can make an im.iression on a 1 full-fledged Jerry Lewis fan truly has impact. Moviegoers apparently will j i have to wait awhile, incident-!] ally, before sharing the preview;, audiences enthusiasm for Miss!] MacLaine. No release date hasji been announced for either "Art- ' lsts and Models” or Alfred! Hitchcock's “The Trouble With;' Harry,” the only other film shej: has made. There’s a rumor that ; ! the Hitchcock picture is being! held in abeyance until later in! the year so it will be fresh m the minds of the Academy < voters. !( Meanwhile, Mr. Wallis, to : whom she is under contract, is seeking another starring vehicle ! for the lass who used to com mute from Arlington to Wis consin avenue to study dancing | with Lisa Gardiner and Mary Day. ** * * THE SEARCHERS Some 1 movie producer is always look-; ing for something. It may be” a 7-year-old boy who looks ex- | actly like James Cagney, or a | cornfield in lowa that looks ex-! 1 actly like a cornfield in Kansas, 1 or—well, almost anything. The ' most notable search in Holly- !! wood history, and the most sue-:; cessful from a publicity stand-j point, was the one conducted by David O. Selznick to find a' Scarlett O’Hara for “Gone With | the Wind.” In retrospect it seems that this went on for' about seven years. Virtually | every English-speaking maiden between the ages of 16 and 36 j was tested, or at least idly con- , sidered. This one, .fames Bacon reports from . wood, is being conducted by Vanessa Brown and Robert Alan Franklin, her producer husband. They are not looking for a i Scarlett O’Hara or, for that 1 matter, for an actor or actress to play anything. Their prob lem is bigger. } They are. you see, embarked on the making of "Mark Twain’s Adam and Eve," a film based on the humorist's “Excerpts From Adam's Diary” and “Eve's Diary.” Their search is for a costume designer—a genius of the art who can make Adam, Eve and Lilith appear authentic while covered enough to satisiy the Motion Picture Code Admin istration. Something more imag inative than giant fig leaves is required. ** * * SO CLEAN Gina Lollobri- ( gida, who is one of them, ex plains in Newsweek why many! Ahead of this on Miss Kelly's schedule, 1 as you already know, is “The Swan,” with studio production chief Dore Schary himself pro-, ducing and Charles Vidor di recting. Louis Jourdan.
