ON THE AIR That Gioconda Smile Was Worth SB,OOO By BERNIE HARRISON Seen and Heard: Wonder if Irv Lichtenstein, whose station is staging the Miss Washington finals at Loew's Capitol tonight, (8:30. WWDC) realizes that we already have a Miss America in our midst? . . . 11-year-old Gertrude America of Hyattsville. . . . Trudy had the time of her young life on “The Name's the Same” last week. The ladies who caught the "Hofne” show’s remote from the AAU swim meet in Philadelphia have deputized me to inform ; leading motion picture studios e that they are out of their mind for not signing Grace Kelly’s 1 i Channel Chuckles < t “Look, Mom! Tolevioion!” * "dreamboat” brother. Jack, to a contract. An art expert questioned the fairness of the SB,OOO question that eliminated Mrs. Jean Thompson on "The $64,000 Ques tion" Tuesday. . . . She was asked to identify the iady who ■ posed for the Mona Lisa (Ma donna Lisa, the wife of Zanobi del Giocondoi and, in the ex-, pert’s opinion, there is doubt that she actually hid. . . . : Reached for comment, Mrs. Thompson felt it was a perfectly . legitimate question. ... “I can I only say,” she remarked as she roared off in her prize caddy ! convertible, "I am perfectly de-: lighted with the whole thing.” 1 ** * * Research Dept: (How I got started in show business, alas. Division.) Case No. 1: Richard Haydn, who costars with Cyril Ritchard and Joan Greenwood in the orig- j inal comedy with music, "The King and Mrs. Candle.” next Monday on Producer’s Showcase, believes it was his ability to imi tate a “red-bellied gugdeon.” "It was rather safe,” the fish imitator reminisced between re hearsals the other day. “You see, nobody ever heard one ex cept me, so no one could ci'iti cize my mimicry." Case No. 2: Johnny Carson traces it all back to a two-inch ad in a Norfolk, Nebraska, paper which proclaimed: “Be a Magi cian and the Life of the Party (if you’re Invited).” Johnny was 12 at the time. ** * * Sour Note: Jackie Gleason’s isummer replacement is a fine; showcase for bands but some of the old-timers who play with' hastily assembled “pickup” crews, suffer by comparison with cur rently active ensembles such as Ray Anthony's. Still, it's fun seeing some of; the greats of yesterday and Sat-; ( urday's treat, which Included Larry Clinton and Bea Wayne { and the Latin-American musical pioneer, Enrlc Madrlguera, was* s no exception. H When the latter headlined;, here at Herbie Sach’s gone-but-;! not-forgotten Del Rio 'where the Playhouse now Ist, his band was ' considerably more Latin In its makeup. "Adios.” the theme song Madriguera wrote, still takes my vote as the loveliest of them all. ** * * There have been few summer replacements of any merit this season—the best, in fact, Is an old summer replacement of twoj or three years’ standing—“ Ethel ] and Albert.” "Windows," the CBS-TV drama series (Friday, 10:30 p.m.) may be the best of the others, and would merit a passing grade for effort alohe. Judith Evelyn's playlet Friday was a case in point; the writing was sensitive i and Illuminating; the perform- I f ances and direction admirably; and quietly keyed. Producer Mort Abrahams and his staff are obviously receptive to off-beat approaches to the half*hour TV play concept. They haven’t quite nit it yet but Tve a hunch that next Friday s play.l adapted from a short story by! Ray Bradbury, may be It. Melvyn Berger, a 265 pounder, will star) as a pathetic fat man who Is the butt of jokes in “Arcade." ** * * If you’ve enjoyed Bill Prince or Margaret Phillips on TV. myi advice is to try to see the both 1 of them in Olney’s wonderfully) spirited production of Shakes peare’s “As You Like It.” I doubt if there’s a TV drama series that hasn’t employed one or the other. Bill, you may recall, co-starred on ABC's "The Mask” with Gary Merrill. He’ll stay over to star in Saroyan's “The Time of Your Life” hext week, Olney’s closing production. »* * * When Ransom Sherman asked by NBC to audition for the role of Fibber in a TV series of "Fib ber McGee and Molly,” he told West Coast reporter Hal Hum phrey : "Now that would be some thing—putting a Swede in an Irishman’s part! I’d have every Irishman in the country reach to lynch me!” TODAY'S RADIO HIGHLIGHTS 8:00, WASH-FM, 10:30, WWDC —Top Secret Piles: Colonel X I foils Communist plot to mur der ex-Red. 8:05, WMAL—Treasury of Music: Dinah Shore, Jerry Lewis and Frankie Lalne, guests. 8:15, WRC—Esplanade Concert:) Outdoor concert pays tribute to founder Arthur Fiedler, who will conduct. 8:30, WASH-FM—Broadway Cop: Tells about “The Twis ter.” 8:30, WMAL—Voice of Fire-; stone: Dorothy Warrenskjold offers selections by Von Suppe.
