ON THE Aik Hollywood Is Up To Its Old Tricks Bf BEBNIE HARRISON “Ounsmoke," the Dragnet of Wes term, swirls Into TV early next month (Saturday. CBC) and It had better be good. The fans of this popular radio aeries have been a steely-eyed, grim lipped lot ever since the news was circulated that William Conrtd, who created Marshal Matt Dillon, wouldn’t be In it. The fellow who will be In it, one James Arnem, stands g.foot-8, weighs 225 pounds and has what the Hollywood trade calls a Randolph Scott Jaw. So it isn’t difficult to figure out why the chubby, average sized Cocfrad, who favors a mus tache that traditionally classifies him with the “bad guys." lost out. In fact, I doubt if he ever was really considered for the part. Producer-director Charles Mar quis Warren, for example, is on record with this statement: "Visually, Conrad just didn’t come across to me as Dillon, despite his years in varied roles. We had to find some one who could fit the part appearance-wise as well as acting-wise. Arness gave us that winning combination.” Well, that's Hollywood for you. And I'm thinking that it’s a good thing Jack Webb had the say about his show. "Dragnet," when it switched from radio to TV. In the movies, Jack had played a variety of bit parts, most of which were hoods. I saw him in one on TV not too long ago and he was chasing the panting hero up and down the city streets, pausing only to lurk la the shadows and snail. Jack’s success as the sterling Sgt. Friday must have come as a stunning surprise to the flus tered Hollywood set. which' promptly tabbed Jack as a fluke and filed the experience in the “exception-that-proves-t He-rule" basket. That Conrad is an accom plished actor is unquestioned. He could easily have been made up to more closely approximate the "hero” type. But he never had a chance. “Gunsmoke” had better be ter rific. ** * * On the Ran: Steve Allen, who has a two week vacation coming up at the end of this month, is reportedly ready to ask NBC to switch the show to Hollywood permanently ... My guess Is that there'll be a compromise: six months in New Tort, six in L.A. Success of “The $85,000 Ques tion" has other networks rush ing plans for big-money give aways . . . Mutual (radio) has one in the works called “Quar ter Million Quiz,” which would be on five nights a week and feaufe eight contestants dally competing for prize money—the topper being (250,000! Should DuMont sell its two stations. Broadcasting-Telecast ing magazine reports, the buyer would probably be Paramount Pictures Corp. . . . The price tag for WTTG is reportedly $3 million. NBC hasn’t heard from the ! sponsors yet, but, it’s planning to take over regular commercial ’ prime” time once a month this ' fall for public affairs programs. . . The first, titled "Nightmare 1 in Red” and tentatively set for 1 Nov. 3. will depict the rise of Communism ... Others planned include "The Jazz Age” and "Rise and Pall of a Dictator," the dictator being Hitler. Steel production tor August 31. . . . Boris Karloff (I heard an announcer call him Morris Karloff the other night) will star. ** * * Aside to BUlton Q. (Dun , ninger) Ford: Who told you i what my wife said when I asked her to check your program? I*o * * Sunday Summary: Willy Ley is a remarkable man, an authority on space science and clear and concise in his queries . . . But I couldn’t help chuckling when he ; pronounced the word “informa tion” on “Face the Nation"—l 1 suddenly thought of Peter Lorre. The interview with Aneurin , Bevan on “Meet the Press” was on film and I suspect the hottest exchanges between Mr. Bevan and panelist Randolph Churchill were snipped by the editor’s shears. NBC’s camera crews were doing a much improved Job covering —the Tam O’Shanter Golf up to the moment I left the house. They were switching back and forth from green to cover the fascinating action. Otherwise, it was a very quiet and circumspect TV night, one of the reasons being that Hedda Hopper wasn't on. JLJ^LJdh^LJKLeMf WHY GAMBLE— [WITH YOUR FUTURE? fl-llfy.
