Interior Makes Ready
For Offshore Leasing

The Department of Interior Is
getting ready for possible exten
sion of oQ and gas leasing of
submerged lands off California
and West Florida.
However, Interior officials said
today there are no immediate
plans for any further lease sales
now that more than $350 mil
lion has been realised within 10
months for lands off Texas and
TontriMii.
They explained that in view
qf commitment of a quarter
of a billion dollars by the oil
industry to offshore leases, plus
f the investment the companies
must make in drilling and de
velopment, it was felt advisable
to hold up further offerings un
til there is active interest in
more.
Mapping Gees On
The Bureau of land Manage
ment, however, is proceeding
with detailed mapping of areas
off the west coast of Florida
and off California so as to be

The editor of the Democratic
Digest says President Eisen
hower can “easily and promptly'’
settle a dispute, touched off by
the magazine, over whether the
President supports major recom
mendations of the Hoover Com
mission.
The magazine, published by
the Democratic National Com
mittee, says in the current issue
that Mr. Eisenhower found
many of the commission’s sug
gestions on Government reor
ganization too “reactionary.”
Former' President Hoover, the
commission chairman, promptly
accused the magazine of an “in
famous smear.”

cotic drugs. I believe your tes
timony would cause semes of
other addicts to seek treatment
and also would re-emphasise to
the medical profession the great
responsibility it has in adminis
tering narcotie drugs.”
Mr. Lugosi surrendered him

Iranian Queen
Visits Riviera
NICE, France, Aug. 18 W-
Queen Soraya of Iran arrived
hen today for an informal vaca
tion on the French Riviera.
A member of the Queen’s party
denied earlier reports, from
Tehran that she was visiting
/Asrope for medical treatment.
“She is very well and in perfect
health,” he said. The Tehran
reports said she would be 1n
Europe about a month.
The Queen flew here by com
mercial airline. She will stay at
Cape p;Antibce- about 10 days.

The California situation is dif
ferent. The Interior officials
said their hands are tied there
until the Supreme Court takes
some action on the long-pending
special master’s report as to
what is California’s coast line.
Until the coast line Is definitely
determined by the court or until
the court says it has dropped
the matter, interior has no way
of knowing just where to start
seaward measurement to locate
the 3-mile limit, the officials said.
Report Ordered
The master’s report was or
dered by the court on June 33,
1947. The document has been
filed with the court but no action
has been taken.
The continental -shelf drops
abruptly in most areas off Cali
fornia, and in some places does
, not extend as far seaward as
3 miles.

chairman of the Citizens’ Com
mittee for the Hoover Report,
said yesterday there is a “vast
reservoir of public support” for
commission suggestions. He
said a committee study indicates
63 per cent of the recommenda
tions have received general sup
port and another 33 per cent
only limited opposition.
The committee is a private
group organised to promote
action on the recommendations.
