Top Field Will Challenge Thompson at Marlboro Br DICK SLAT, Dr. Dick Thompson, the Washington dentist who scored double victories in both the pre vious sports car events at Marl boro Motor Raceway this sum mer, is almost certain to en gage stiller challenges Sunday. The Lavender Hill Mob Rac ing Association will put on a nine-race card Sunday in its third and last venture ol 1955 on the mile asphalt course at Marl boro. One of the races will be the 12-lap run for production cars of over 3,000 cc. engine displace ment. Doc Thompson doesn’t figure to have much trouble fin ishing high up in this one. He will be driving his Jaguar XK 140 MC against other Jags, plus a sprinkling of Chevrolet Cor vettes and Ford Thunderbirds. But if he qualifies for the second feature race it is there that the competition most likely will converge. Thompson drove a Mercedes- Bens 300 SL belonging to Byron Roudabush to win the feature for cars above 2,000 cc. on July 10. This time the Mercedes will be in the hands of rival Charlie Wallace, the 1964 Jaguar MAJOR LEAGUE LEADERS By Um Suoclsted Press aowgkf. Returning to Marlboro, also, will be Dr. M. R. J. Wyllle of Allison Park, Pa., who all but overtook Thompson lost month in his C-type Jaguar. Duncan Black’s 4.5-liter Fer rari is another machine that will push anything on the course. This is the car with which Big Bin Spesrwon the 200-mUe main event at Andrews Air Force Base in May, 1964, and which was clocked at 168 miles per hour in the measured mile at Daytona Beach last February. Add to that foursome a late entry received yesterday. It is another Mercedes-Benz 300SL, owned and driven by Fred Sclavl of Charleston, W. Va. No one here seems to know the man, but he is listed as a national event driver. If that isn’t enough, include an Olds-Allard J2K and a modi fied Austin-Healey 1008 in the field and you come up with a sparkling lineup of probables for the 20-lap feature. In all, 84 entries had been re ceived through yesterday for this i regional event of the Sports Car Club of America. The show will begin Sunday at 1 p.m. »McElhenny May Stay on Bench In Giants Game MORAOA, Calif., Aug. 18 <47. He got an eyeful of Dupre on television in the All-Star game with the Cleveland Browns last Friday night. The halfback was an offensive star of the victory over the Browns. Eye Injury Keeping Evers in Hospital DETROIT, Aug. 18 (P).—An eye injury suffered in yester day’* game with the Tigers pro mises to keep Hoot Evers, veter an Cleveland outfielder, in Detroit Memorial Hospital at least a day or two. Dr. Alfred Whittaker, staff physician, described the Injury as “fairly severe,” but said that Evers eyesight will not be im paired. A spokesman said they would be able to tell more after treatment today. Even suffered the Injury pinch-hitting for Pitcher Bob Feller in the sixth inning. A foul tip struck him in the right eye. REDSKINS Continued From Page C-l Le Baron on run-out plays beat us,” Oillman said. “He can throw on the run real well, and our deep guys were puzsled whether to lay back and wait for the pass or come up and help out on the running plays. We simply couldn’t be sure what the play would be and had to wait until it developed. Then it was too late.” Leßaron went all the way on the offense, except for a few minutes near the end of the first half when a painful but not serious Injury on the back of his leg forced him to retire in favor of Dorow. At the time, the Redskins were on the Rams’ 16-yard line and ap parently headed for another touchdown and a half-time lead of 24-14. Eddie didn’t seem troubled by the Injury in the second half as the lead see sawed in a tight game which wasn’t decided until the last few minutes. Leßaron tossed an 8-yard pass to Ralph Thomas for the first score midway in the second quarter. He hit the same small, but elusive, end from San Fran cisco University for another 6- pointer near the end of the half to give the Redskins a 17-14 lead. But Leßaron saved his best for the last—a 81-yard scoring pan to Carson that stretched the Redskins’ margin to 31-21, almost locking up the bail game with three and one-half minutes to go. That was the one Kuharich raved about. “He kept pulling ’em in, draw ing them closer,” the coach said, beaming, “and then he pulled the string. Eddie really showed ’em he can throw deep.” Leßaron outpitched Norm Van Brocklin, the Rams’ league leading passer, by completing eight of 15 tosses for 155 yard*. Van Brocklin had 7 completions in 19 attempts for 137 yards. Eddie had no interceptions, while two of Van Brocklln’s fell into Redskins hands, and the little Washington quarterback outscored his rival, four to two. Co-stars with Leßaron to a lesser degree were Ralph Felton, Bert Zagers of Michigan State, Chuck Drazenovich, Gene Brito, Lavem Torgeson, Jim Mona chino, Janowicz and Scooter Scudero. Pictures of the game undoubtedly will turn up others whose work was lost sight of in the pile-ups, for it was a good supporting cast Leßaron nad last night. Interceptions Help Drazenovich Intercepted a Van Brocklin pass on the Rams’ 20 to set up the Redskins’ first touchdown. Brito recovered a fumble by Ron Waller of Mary land to set the stage for Jano wicz’s field goal, and Torgeson intercepted another Van Brock lin pitch on the Ram’s 43 for a scoring opportunity which the Redskins failed to make good on in the second period. Zagers launched the Redskins' i final scoring drive with a 22- yard punt return, after seem -1 ingly being trapped, that put the [ ball on his own 46-yard line. I Leßaron cagtly sent big Bob , Goode crashing into the line be t fore cutting loose with a perfect i peg to Carson for the touchdown. The Rams were explosive, too, i and their Woody Lewis turned in ahe game’s best and longest run —a 76-yard kickoff return to , the Washington 26, following i Janowicz’s field goal. It set the i stage for Van Brocklin’s 12-yard pass to Tom Fears for Los An ; geles' first score. With only 55 seconds to go in ths first half, the Rams went 61 yards on three plays, with i Van Brocklin tossing to speedy Bob Boyd for the last 30 yards. Tharp Goes 29 Yards The Rams’ next outburst gave them a 21-17 lead early in the third period, when Corky Tharp, rookie from Alabama, churned around left end with a pltchout for 29 yards and a touchdown after Les Richter recovered Monachino’s fumble. Richter later tried a 49-yard field goal that was wide. Hie Rams’ last touchdown followed a 66-yard advance, with Dan Towler rumbling around end for the last 10 yards. Leßaron, who took the Red skins 81 yards on 11 plays for their second touchdown in the second period, outsmarted the Rams on a daring play that pre vented them from getting one more scoring chance with less than a minute to play. On fourth down, with about 7 yards to go for the Redskins, the Rams sent in their punt return specialists. But Leßaron called for an end run by Jano wicz, and Vic went around right end for 16 yards to the Los An geles 18. It was a simple matter THE EVENING STAR, Washington, D. C. THUmSDAY, AUGUST IS.
