B-4 FASHION NOTEBOOK An Austrian Beginning Has an American End By ELENI Where a fashion begins and ends is alwaya fascinating to discover. About a quarter of a century ago in Salzburg, home of the famous music festival, Sepp Lanz opened a ahop that fea tured colorful peasant cos tumes with their delightful bright fabrics and delicate em broidery and handwork. The women from all over the world who visited Salzburg took home these charming Lanz designs. American wom en were among the most en chanted with the full dirndl skirts, tiny wants, and the flattering bodice lines of the Lanz of Salzburg designs. Back in 1932 an outlet shop was opened in New York and that date was the kickoff for the popularity of the dirndl In America, and other Sepp Lanz’ creations. The story of Lanz continues with two brothers who came from Bavaria and settled in California. Brought up within a hundred miles of Salzburg the brothers were familiar with the Tyrolean-Inspired clothes and thought them charming ideas for California’s casual minded women. They opened the second Lanz shop in America. In 1946 with the retirement of Sepp Lanz. the two brothers. Kurt and Werner Scharff, launched their own designing firm specializing in gay, young clothes based on the old-world Tyrolean folk styles. So now the fashions that were bom in Austria are finding themselves raised in California and being worn throughout the United States. This season's collection has come to town and the cotton prints from Austria, the checked wool challls from Switzerland, and the other fabrics used to fashion the dis tinctive young-looking styles are even more delectable due to the narrow self bindings, perky bows, the rick-rack and unusual button trims that are on them. •* * * We saw a check list that one of the stores put out as re quired reading for back-to schoolers. One really fine re minder for the campus-bound noted that going back to school with a neat wardrobe also meant that It would stay that way if the student also took along garment bags, shoe bags/ boxes, hangers, hat boxes, a laundry bag and mailing cases if they’re necessary. ** * * Back In those days that some refer to as the good old ones a big man on campus was the guy with the rumble seat car and a coonskin coat. Times have changed since the 20's. Now college boys would like to sport a Jaguar and a short coat of camel colored wool to earn that big man on campus accolade. ** * * Here’s good news for par ents worried about traffic and their youngsters being out after dark. A new fabric woven with a new reflective yam acta as a signal light. When the direct beams of a car’s headlights hit the fab ric,'the light is reflected back to its source and the wearer becomes brilliantly visible. Except, in direct rays of light the fabric la Indistinguishable from ordinary fabric. Fashion Notes From AH Over FALL PARTY NOTE to be filed away for a Thanksgiving Day table decoration. At one of the millinery showings the tables were decorated with bowls of autumn flowers with autumn-colored satin ribbons streaming from each side of the bowl. Acorns and walnuts were scotch-taped to the rib bons. The effect... very festive . . . and thought up by Bea trice-Martin the milliner.
