Scouts Open
Jamboree
In Canada
NIAGARA ON THE LAKE.
Ont., Aug. 20.—A Gross-sec
tion of-the world’s scouting
population formally kicked
off the eighth world Scout
Jamboree today after two
days of feverish, last-minute
preparations.
The opening ceremonies
were scheduled for this aft
ernoon with Vincent Massey,
Governor-General of Canada,
and Lord Rowallam, chief
scout of the British Com
monwealth and Empire, tak
ing part.
A bit of friction developed,
meanwhile, although not
among the youngsters in the
colossal gathering of 10,800
Scouts and leaders. The trou
ble was over invitations to
top Canadian government
leaders or, as one govern
ment official said, the lack
of same.
Officiate at Odds
Prime Minister St. Laurent
and his cabinet weren’t in
vited, the official said. A
jamboree official said they
were. He said they were in
vited twice—one specifically
to today’s formal ceremonies
and again generally to visit
the 700-acre jamboree site
gt the mouth of the Niagara
River any time.
The only disputes among
the Scouts, however, were
centered on such earth-shak
ing issues as how many
French shoulder patches an
Australian scarf is worth.
Souvenirs in Demand
Like youngsters everywhere,
every Scout at the jamboree
seemingly was intent on
carrying home all the souve
nirs he could carry. One
French lad, being prepared
in no uncertain way was seen
with decorative shoulder and
pocket emblems stitched on a
long roll of khaki cloth. He
snipped them off with scissors
in whatever number was
needed to make his “pur
chases.”
In a report yesterday, M&J.
Gen. D. C. Spry of London,
director of the Boy Scouts
International Bureau, said
scouting was booming
throughout the free world.
He said the last biennial
Seout census showed that 6.3
million youngsters were tak
ihg part—an increase of a;
million over the previous
census.
