Chinese Students Quoted
On 'Persecution 7 in U. 5.
TOKYO, Aug. 20 (JP).—Three
Chinese students, recently re
turned to their Communist
homeland, told a story today of
what they called “interrogations,
persecutions, threats, arrests
and jailings” while being de
tained three and a half years in
the United States.
Peiping Radio, in a lengthy
propaganda broadcast, identified
them and the schools they at
tended as:
Miss Sha Yi-shen, University
of California; Huang Pae-tung,
Texas A&M and Polytechnic In
stitute of Brooklyn, and Tu Yen
yae, Pennsylvania State Uni
versity.
Say They Lived in Fear
All said they lived in fear.
They claimed there were others
being held under similar condi
tions. Red China has made the
same charge in ambassadorial
talks now under way at Geneva
to free citizens of the two na
tions.
Huang, a chemistry student,
said:
“I was imprisoned for 116
days on Ellis Island. ... I spent
nearly four months in the
shadow of the Statue of Liberty
in a single, big. filthy room,
crowded with hundreds of people,
which somebody compared to the
asylum in the .. . movie ‘Snake
pit.’ "
Tu, a student of physics, said:
“I was haunted by United States
Immigration * authorities, cross
questioned and even put in jail
(for three days).”
He said he was questioned first
in June, 1950, about his political
beliefs. Nine months later, im
migration authorities asked him
to report and he asked a post
ponement to finish final exams.
Says He Was Arrested
“The immigration office sent
its agent to Pennsylvania State
University and arrested me on
the spot.” he continued.
Tu said he was released, but
questioned again in 1952 before
