A native of Salisbury. Md., Mr.ii Harcum came to Washington in March. Although crippled from:: Infancy, he felt he had the ability i to make a living for himself. He told his story to Walter ; Lineberg. supervisor of news-, stands and street sales for The. Star. “I didn’t think we could help , Joe because he can’t get out of j his wheel chair without help,” , Mr. Lineberg said. “But he was , persistent, and after he called ] on me several times, I began f looking around for a location.” . The Portland Building lobby was "discovered” as a promising site after three months of i searching. Nick Basiliko, owner j of the building, expressed a willingness to co-operate in set-, ting up the stand. He offered 1 to waive rental charges for the ] space until Mr. Harcum eStab- i lishes himself. j i Meanwhile, Mrs. Wandajune j Kearney, a placement officer with the Selective Placement . Division of the United States Employment Service, was brought ; into the case. She worked with j Mr. Lineberg on such details as ; contacting soft drink, candy, I cigarette and magazine suppliers, in the area to advance supplies for the new venture. ! AAUW Hears Scientist Os Peaceful Atom The American Association of University Women last night heard an illustrated talk by a top atomic scientist on how the atom can be put to work in peacetime. Dr. Paul Aebersold. director of the Atomic Energy Commission's isotopes division at Oak Ridge, Tenn., spoke at a dinner meet ing of the women’s group on “Radioisotopes—Peaceful Bene-; fits of the Atom.” Using color slides.
