THE PASSING SHOW 'Janus 1 Author Adds To Scranton's Fame By JAY CARMODY SATURDAY SUMMARY: Just u this correspondent exclu sively predicted in this paper (and Dick Coe exclusively predicted it in the morning one), "Janus" is a Broadway delight ... A de light heavily tinctured by the fact that Carolyn Green, a Scranton wife and mother of .three, is its author and that it is her first play. Scranton wives and mothers of three are not supposed to write the smartest of comedies . . .For a reason that eludes us, if any Scrantonian decides to take um brage at that observation . . . And yet a good case could be made for Scranton as the coun try’s current center of sophisti cation .. After all, it is also the native heath (flattering word) of Jean Kerr. _ Mrs. Kerr, wife of Herald- Tribune critic Walter, displayed her brilliantly brittle wit—quite of a piece with Mrs. Green’s—in "The King of Hearts.” ... If Mrs. Kerr’s observations on the human comedy are the more oor rosive, well, she’s lived these last few years in the heart of the Broadway theater district; at night in Larchmont . . . There’s nothing like Sardi’s to put an edge on a woman's words. With Mrs. Green now so hap pily launched, Scranton should feel pretty sunny about itself ... And especially its girls. ** * * ACTOR WARNED: Actor Donald Cook, in town rehearsing for "La Ronde” which opens the new Studio Theater on Monday night, has been alerted for what might otherwise have been a shattering surprise. This is Mr. Cook’s first in-the round performance and a critic friend thought he ought to be forewarned about one thing . . . This is the circumstance that when the actors return for cur tain calls, three strange charac ters suddenly make their ap pearance on stage. "These.” Mr. Cook was told, "will be the critics getting the blank out of there to their type writers.” It has always been one of the disconcerting things about arena-style production ... Most disconcerting, perhaps to the critics involved, who like to be have Unrudely ... At least until they get back to their offices. Incidentally, speaking of "La Ronde," the Studio theater man agement is disturbed no end that people keep associating it with the movie ... That was one thing .. . The production starring Mr. Cook and June Havoc in Eric Bentley’s adaptation of Arthur Schnitsler’s potion, is quite an other ... Very much alive, every one associated with it intends it to be. • ** * * SHOWY PLACE, THIS: It's Washington that brings out the paternal and maternal in thea ter people—film people too. but less so—on their visits here .. . It is a city, the visitors quickly begin to feel, that the children ought to see ... So, if possible, they make arrangements to brfing the children. ’ This explains that large fam ily group around the Raleigh this holiday week end . . . Its mem bers are the Crouses, fattier, mother, Lindsay Ann (named for Howard Lindsay, of course), Timmy and the young woman in charge of the young Crouses .. . It is not the first visit of the younger tribal members,.. Tim my. who towers a few inches above a dining room table, is an old Smithsonian hand, who likes it here very much . . . Lindsay Ann. a small gtrl with jellied fingers and an angel's smile, is very glad to be here too ... On a more general premise than Smithsonian, if the latter does not mind. ** * * THE BIGGIES: Weekly Va riety, which keeps the records, is out again with the report that “Guys and Dolls,” to the sur prise of no one and the delight of Sam Ooldwyn. is again the k J. In second place is “Cinerama Holiday,” playing in fewer thea ters (12) than any other picture in general release ... Next comes "The Tender Trap.” which the critics liked, followed by "Rebel Without a Cause,” toward which the reviewers were lukewarm ... Beyond these, the first 10 is com posed of "The View Prom Pom pey’s Head,’ "Man With a Gun,” “African Lion,” “Trial," Big Knife" and "I Died a Thousand Times.” ** * * FINAL WARM-UP: A new phenomenon is turning up in the theater which may eventu ally have its effect upon "the road.” . . . This is an increase in the practice of opening plays "cold” on Broadway after a series of preview performances. ... It is being given a new twist, here and there, as in the case of Thornton Wilder’s "The Matchmaker.” ... This one. even after a four weeks’ tour on the road, will be given a week of in vited previews before it is ex posed to the critics in a formal opening, on December S. In its favor, as against the invitational preview, the road still has the merit of being the place where the money is if the play is worth the money ... The National's recent brand - new "Janus.” to be specific, left Washington with clow! to $70,000 ... The equally new "The Great Sebastians” will leave with even more. Since money remains one of the most loveable things in the lives bf play producers, “the foad” adjacent to New York will no doubt continue to hold its own. Chill Wills Hopes Francis Will Live HOLLYWOOD I/P) .—Chill Wills, the voice of Francis, hopes the famous mule will be talking his way in and out of scrapes for years to come There have been reports that the series might come to an end, especially since Donald O’Connor is no longer con nected with Universal-Internal tional. The dancing star has voiced his distaste for doing any more Francis films. Wills' comment on that; “That's the strangest thing I ever heard of—a feud between an actor and a jackass.” Adds Wills: "I don’t think they should stop the series. After all. that little ole mule has brought in between, 22 and 25 million dollars.” Note: This sounds a little high, but then Chill is from Texas (Bea govffie), - “The pictures aren't doing "AM me A'ft naST THEATEB” I'M S:aa Mill Wfde. a S»U. 2:39 'lkOwtSMbms * ANnCrnKte HOWAtO UNOSAY eed *Vttlt C*OUM Wrcctod Ar MnAIGNI WIHWW »«» OSw Oka IS A.M.
