Johnson Puts Himself In 'Moderation' Gimp By J. A. O’LEARY Senate Democratic Leader Johnson of Texas is not com mitting himself to any of the aspirants for the Democratic presi dential nomination next year, but he sees nothing wrong with "moderation” as a Democratic attribute. He made this clear at a press conference yesterday on his first visit to the Capitol since recovering from his July heart attack. A reporter asked him if he agreed with Gov. Averell Harri- man of New York that modera-1 tion has no place in a Demo cratic dictionary. The New York governor, who is expected to be one of the contenders at the Democratic convention, has crit icized Adlal Stevenson of Illinois for displaying too much modera tion on some issues. Refuses to Comment Senator Johnson said he did not know what Gov. Harriman said, and would not comment on the views of any one else. "But, in my own right,” he added, "I will say I hope I am not immoderate. Moderation to me means tolerance —a failure to embrace extremes. In my own conduct I have always thought of myself as one moderate in ap proach to problems, who could listen to the viewpoint of others, and learn." Senator Johnson said he has Stevenson Hits Security Abuse CHICAGO, Dec. 13 f/P).—Adlai E. Stevenson says many innocent citizens have been “grievously in jured” by the Government in its enforcement of security measures., “The excesses that we have en dured.” he said, “are not neces sary ii\ order to keep dangerous people out of Government, but because we have bold demagogues and timid servants within.” Speaking before the Chicago Women’s Division the Arileri jan Jewish Congress yesterday. Ihe candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination declared: "An America, at the height of its power, influence and wealth, which is anxious and suspicious of a large segment of its citizens, i is a sorry sight. And for its Gov ernment to appear to be the per secutor rather than the defender of the innocent is revolting.” Mr Stevenson predicted that "the pendulum of passion will swing back and it will be cor rected, I have no doubt, but none 1 too soon.” He said the “passionate dif ferences of men and nations will harass us for the foreseeable future. But if the truths that 1 will heal and bind us together are ever to emerge, there must ( be confidence in ourselves and in our faith in freedom, and there i must be a free trade of, ideas within the Nation and among nations.” ;! “That is why.” he added, “the j preservation of the guarantees?, of our Bill of Rights must have , a high priority in the personal history of any true Democrat. If < my labors have helped to make ] firm our liberties. I am grateful.” Mr. Stevenson received an award at the meeting for “fur- 1 therance of constitutional prin- ] eiples,” and “for championing : civil liberties and civil rights." Senator Johnson looked tan ned and rested by months of re laxation on his Texas ranch, and said that his doctors regard his recovery as "phenomenal.” But he, indicated that he is awaiting i further checkups between now and January 1 before deciding how active he will be as majority I leader of the Senate this winter. But, following the leadership meeting at the White j House today, the Texan will fly to Atlanta for a consultation | with one of his doctors. After Upending Christmas in Texas, jhe will then go to the Mayo Clinic at Rochester, Minn., on December 28 for another check up. •When Senator Johnson said he is not a candidate for any office next year, a reporter asked if he thought any man who has been through approximately the same experience as the Senator should run for office next year. Senator Johnson said he would not be so presumptuous as to answer for anyone else, but added: “I would hope the President’s health is such that he could be a candidate if he chose to be.” The majority leader predicted the Senate will pass the contro versial gas bill, already ap proved by the House, which takes producers of natural gas from under Federal rate regulations. He said both Democrats and Re publicans will be divided on the issue but that a majority will support it. As to how soon tax reduction will be considered in the new session.
