False Car Parts
: Advertising by
GM Charged
By the Associated Prese
General Motors Corp. has
been charged by the Government
with falsely advertising that
“genuine Chevrolet" replacement
parts are better than parts com*
netitors sell without the "gen
uine” label.
GM had no immediate com
ment on the complaint, issued
yesterday by the Federal Trade
Commission.
FTC said GM buys many
Chevrolet parts from other man
ufacturers. some of whom design
the part; themselves and sell to
others besides GM.
These parts, said FTC, “are at
least equal in all material re
spects” to those GM sells, but
GM advertises the parts it buys
as "genuine” with the implica
tion that all others are not as
good.
The Federal agency accused
GM of representing that the ■
Chevrolet parts it distributes are
designed and manufactured ex
clusively for GM. It called this
“false, misleading and decep
tive” and said GM’s claims ’’di
vert business from competitors to
their injury and the injury of
the public, in violation of the
Federal Trade Commission Act.”
FTC said its complaint “had
nothing to do wltli” the recent
hearings on GM held by a Senate
antitrust subcommittee headed
by Senator O’Mahoney. Demo
crat of Wyoming.
President Harlow Curtice and
Other GM officials testified they
are not trying to squeeze out
smaller firms in replacement
parts for GM cars. They said
GM now sells half of all new
cars and trucks but has only 20
per cent of the parts business,,
so the company naturally wants
to capture a bigger share of the
parts market.
GM has 30 days to file An
answer to the FTC complaint. A
hearing before an FTC examiner
was set for February 14 in De
troit.
Band Leader Sues
Hotel for $35,000
LAS VEGAS. Nev., Dec. 15 UP}.;
—The Royal Nevada Hotel has;
been sued for *35.000 by Phil;
Spitalny. leader of an all-girl"
orchestra.
The plush casino-hotel owes '
him the money for the balance of
a four-week contract, the band
leader said in the suit filed yes-,
terday in Superior Court. Mr.!
Spitalny was discharged after,
only two weeks, the suit stated.
A jien yielded only *2.100, Mr.
Spitathy’s attorney said, and
added an order will be sought
attaching the hotel’s bank ac
count.
