Woman Grocer Turns 111 Luck Into Benefit for Hospice The hard luck of a small gro cery store in the 3*oo block of Fourteenth street N.W. yesterday ; worked to the benefit of a haven of the poor. Mrs. Jeanne Perrone closed her shop because of 111 health and the fact that she couldn’t work two jobs at once. Mrs. Perrone, who Is employed by the Agricul ture Department by day, tried to run the affairs of her store by night. But Instead of selling out her entire stock, she reserved a sls able portion of it as a gift to the Blessed Martin de Porres Hospice, 38 I street N.E. Stolen Bicycle 'Solved' By Robbery Squad's Gift A little girl who saved ud for a year to buy a bike—only to have It stolen last summer—has a new one for Christmas, cour tesy of the Robbery Squad of the Metropolitan Police Depart ment. Juanita Upchurch, 12, came down to headquarters yesterday for the presentation. She looked fondly at the $55 bicycle she helped the policemen pick out — a black English racer with white I tires. j "It s nicer than the one I bought myself.” she said. "This |is a boy s bike and I like it better. My old one was a girl s bicycle.” Special Protection “Nita.” who is taking no ! chances this time, is planning to keep the bicycle in the bed room of her home. The Robbery | Squad men also provided her with a substantial lock for out door use. They have registered the vehicle with the Youth Aid j Division, which has set up a 'special registration system for bikes, and they are planning to jtake out insurance for her, too. For about a year. Nita saved The hospice provides food. ’ clothing, shelter and celan-up facilities for from 40 to 100 of 1 the city’s down and out each day. . Mrs. Perrone chose the hospice . as her beneficiary, having heard : of its activities broadcast recently ’ by a television show. Her donation filled a panel , truck and a passenger vehicle. It ’ included canned vegetables and fruits, dried legumes and grains . and numerous cleansing articles. “I simply felt this was the 1 thing to do, especially at this 1 time of year,” Mrs. Perrone ex plained. 9L. JUANITA UPCHURCH Has New Bike —Star Staff Photo $1 out of her $1.50 weekly allow ance to buy her first bicycle. She kept it in the downstairs hall of the apartment house she lived in at 904 Newark avenue N.W. "The day it was stolen.” she said, “I came home excited about something and didn’t notice the bike was gone. I ran upstairs, changed into my dungarees, came down to get it, and it wasn't there.” She notified police, who made a diligent search for the bike but weren't able to find it. Tears Reinforce Plea One day she ran Into Detec tive Sergt. Mark Gray, of the Robbery Bquad, whom she knew by sight, on a corner near J her home. In tears, she asked him to help her find her bike. Although stolen bicycles are not normally the province of the Robbery Squad. Sergt. Gray and his colleagues kept their eyes open for the bike, looking in out of-the-way alleys and other spots where a stolen bike might be discarded. Finally, they felt the search was hopeless and de cided to buy Nita a new bicycle. So the 32 members of the Roberry Squad played Santa Claus to the little girl, who is in the seventh grade at St. Mary's School on Fifth street between H and G streets N.W. Nits's mother, a waitress, has just one stipulation about the gift: Nita must wait until Christmas Day before she rides it. Gen. De Castries, Wife Injured in Car Crash MELUN, France, Dec. 22 UP).
