Gillmore, a West Pointer, headed the New Jersey National Guard from 1924 to 1932. He was born at West Point. "N. Y., January 12. 1881. and graduated from the Military Academy there in 1904. Hugh Brannen, 55, Columnist And Newspaper Editor Here Hugh Brannen, 55. a news paperman here for 25 years, died jof a heart attack last night at Chincoteague (Va.i Yacht and Sportsman's Club. He had gone duck hunting there earlier in the day. Born in Milledgeville, Ga., he was the son of the late Dr. D. W. Brannen. a Presbyterian min ister. and Eliza Thomas Bran nen. Mrs. Brannen. who is 82, still lives in Milledgeville. After attending the Georgia Military College, he served as a Marine in World War I. He i also attended Union Theological Seminary in Richmond. Va. |He went to work for the Augusta Chronicle about 1920, and later was employed by the Macon Telegraph, the Tampa < Fla.) Times, the New York Evening Post and the Atlanta jjournal. i Mr. Brannen was on the staff of the Washington Times-Herald in 1930, was a copyreader on the Washington Post from 1933 to 1935. and was on the staff of! Surviving are his widow, of the home address, 5208 South Eleventh street, Arlington; his I GEORGE BENJAMIN WOOD Ben Wood, 79, Ex-Star Printer George Benjamin Wood, 79, a printer at The Star for 40 years, died today at Mount Alto Hos pital of pneumonia. He had been hospitalized since December 26. Mr. Wood retired from The Star 10 years ago. A lifelong baseball enthusiast, he was one of the organizers of the local team in the Printers’ International Baseball League, and played in the first tourna ment in New York in 1908. He also played with the Filth Bap tist Church in the Interdenomi national League here. Mr. Wood was a native of Charles County, Md.. and came to Washington as a boy in his teens. He served in Cuba in the Spanish-American War with the 3d Engineer Regiment. Last June. Mr. Wood cele brated his golden wedding an-; niversary. He and Mrs. Wood, the former Ada Bates of Wash ington, were married in the par sonage of the Calvary Baptist Church on June 5. 1905. Mr. Wood was a member of the United Spanish War Vet-; erans and of Columbia Typo graphical Union No. 101. , Surviving are his widow, his daughter, Mrs. Helen Wood Mar tin, of the home address, 7216 Trescott avenue, Takoma Park, Md., and two brothers. Funeral arrangements, which; are being handled by the Col lins funeral home, 3821 Four tenth street N.W., are incom plete. i j Mrs. Mercer, District Native Mrs. Mabel Vaughn Mercer, < 79, a native of Washington, died yesterday at Washington Sani-; tarium after a long illness. Mrs. Mercer was an active, member of Calvary Baptist* Church and Sunday school for; 68 years. Her father. Francis W. Vaughn, was founder of the Vaughn Bible Class at the church ' at Eighth and H streets N.W. A graduate of old Central High School and the old Normal School, now Wilson Teachers College, Mrs. Mercer taught grammar for four years at Brenti School here. She later served as : corresponding secretary of the. Women's Missionary Association 1 of the District of Columbia for 10 years. Mrs. Mercer's first husband,: William P. Kyle, died in 1909. She then married Army Maj. Morton B. Mercer, a widower 1 with three children. Maj. Mercer died in 1919. Surviving are her daughter, j; Mrs. A. Hunter Prichard, with: whom she lived at 4814 Sedg- ! wick street N.W.; her stepson. James Mercer of Framingha" Mass., and two grandsons. Novelist Christopher La Farge, 58. who also was an archi tect. painter and poet, died after a cerebral hemorrhage at Jane Brown Hospital last night. Among his best-selling books were “The Sudden Guest.” “Each to the Other.” “The Wilsons.” “East by Southwest,” “Mesa Verde,” “All Sorts and Kinds” and “Beauty for Ashes.” “The Sudden Guest" was a novel dealing with the 1938 hur ricane in his home section of Rhode Island, South County. It had a sale of more than half a million copies. The book "Each to the Other,” which took him five years to write, was awarded the A. C. Benson Silver Medal of the Royal Society of Literature in England. His late father, Christopher! Grant La Farge, was architect of! the Cathedral of St. John the; Divine in New York. His brother, l Oliver La Farge. is a novelist! Dr. Zeno P. Metcalf, Entomologist RALEIGH, N. C., Jan. 6 </P).— ( : Dr. Zeno Payne Metcalf. 70, one] of the Nation’s outstanding en tomologists, died at his home ' yesterday. Dr. Metcalf, a North Carolina i State College faculty member for: . more than 43 years, was stricken! while talking with members of his family. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon. Dr Metcalf was the author of nine books and was an activei ; member of numerous learned and professional societies. Last March he was presented the Oli ver Max Gardner award as the, faculty member of the consoli-' .dated University of North Caro lina making the “greatest con tribution to the human race” in '1955. He was a native of Lakesville,! Ohio, and was educated at Ohio' State University and Harvard University. Mr. Gragg received his title through his participation in the annual “Singing on the Moun tain” which attracts thousands ihere. Mr. Gragg, who wore a full white beard, had taken part !in the singing for 25 years. He had been an Advent Chris tian minister for more than 60 years. Reds Won't Agree To Free Americans LONDON, Jan. 6 (/P). Red China refused today to fix a time limit for the release of Americans the Communists are holding in prison as criminals. Peiping radio, commenting on Chinese-American talks in Ge neva, said: “While they are serving their sentences, they have no right to request permission to return to the United States.” The United States has ac cused Red China of violating an agreement it made September 10 to permit all American citi zens within its control to return home “expeditiously ” The Chi nese Communists said 27 of 40 Americans had been released so far. “Americans who offended against the law in China must be dealt with in accordance with Chinese legal procedures and no !time limit can be set for their release.” the Peiping broadcast said. “Furthermore, while they are serving their sentences, they !have no right to request per mission to return to the United (States.”
