B-12 •• the EVENING STAR, Washington, D. C. TWMBAT, JUNE BS.JBM Hall Expected to Tell G.O.P. President Will Run By the Associated Press v The Republican convention arrangements committee, meeting tomorrow, apparently will make its plans without direct word on President Eisenhower’s second term intentions. O. O. P. national chairman Leonard W. Hall is expected to tell the 46-member committee he is confident there is no change in Mr. Eisenhower’s plans to run again, but it will be only an opinion The arrangements committee faces the task of picking a key niter and other officials for the G. O. P.’s San Francisco nomi nating convention, beginning August 20. Also before the group will be a proposal to shorten the con vention from four to three days —a move that would contemplate the speedy approval of a ticket headed by Mr. Eisenhower with Vice President Nljcon as his run ning mate. Mr. Hall obviously would like to take to the committee meet ing reassuring word direct from Mr. Eisenhower that his intesti nal operation will not affect his plans to run again. On the other hand, if there was any positive signal of doubt about a second-term bid, Mr. Hall probably would feel under compulsion to ask the arrange ments group to delay its final decisions. But Mr. Hall apparently is not 3 Candidates' Aides Confer Representatives of Adlai Ste venson, Gov. Averell Harriman of New York, and Senator Estes Kefauver of Tennessee, three leading candidates for the Dem ocratic presidential nomination, today conferred with Democratic National Chairman Paul M. But ler on plans for the coming na tional political campaign at Dem ocratic headquarters. Carmine G. DeSapjo, Tam many leader, here for Gov. Har riman, as he went into the con ference was asked how many delegates the New York Gov ernor would have lined up for him when the Democratic Na tional Convention opens August 13 in Chicago. It has been gen erally reported that Mr. Steven son would be well out in front in the number of delegates at that time. "I don’t pay much attention to claims of delegate strength,” Mr. DeSapio replied. “A lot of things can happen between now and August.” The Stevenson campaign man agers, including James Finnegan of Philadelphia, wore broad smiles and admitted they were feeling “pretty good” about their candidate’s chances of winning the presidential nomination. | The Kefauver managers, while not so buoyant, insisted their; man was still very much in the race. Former Attorney General J. Howard McGrath and F. Joseph Donohue, campaign managers for the Tennessee Senator attended the conference. In addition to Mr. DeSapio. those representing Mr. Harriman were Neale Roach and George Backer. For Mr. Stevenson were Barry Bingham, publisher of the Louisville Courier-Journal and co-chairman of the Stevenson for-President Clubs: Harry Ash more, personal assistant to Mr. Stevenson; Thomas K. Finletter of New York, and William M. Blair. I Chairman Butler said he asked for the conference to talk over with leading contenders for the presidential nomination the plans being made in regard to television and radio time, and other details of the fall cam paign. Poll Shows Stevenson Strength in Michigan LANSINO, Mich., June 21 VP). An Associated Press poll of Michigan delegates to the Demo- j cratic National Convention shows strength for Adlai E. Ste venson if Oovernor O. Mennen Williams withdraws from the presidential race. Since the delegation is pledged, Initially to Mr. Williams as a “favorite son” candidate, dele gates were asked to name a sec ond and third preference if he dropped out. On the basis of returns from 31 of the 88 delegates, eight picked Mr. Stevenson for second choice, six named Governor Averell Hfuriman of New York and one was undecided between the two. Senator Estes Kefauver of Tennessee was second choice on four returns and Senator Stuart Symington of Missouri was second on three. The re maining nine delegates who an swered the poll said they were undecided. And White House Press Secretary : James C. Hagerty said yesterday Mr. Eisenhower has no plans to : send any message to the group Mr. Hall is caught in the web | of one of his own rules—that , the national committee will not initiate any of its contacts with the President. Under this rulfe, , the G. O. P. chairman doesn’t ask for appointments. He goes i to see the President only when the suggestion comes from the i White House. Lacking more definite word, ! Mr. Hall's position is that the , President spoke out on his sec . ond term intentions Feb. 29, that ' Republicans answered in pri maries and conventions by [ pledging more than 900 conven tion votes to him, and that ; nothing has changed.
