“UNCLE SAM.” When Sam Fox, a former Central High
School football and basketball player, was in Turkey
recently on a State Department sports mission, he was so
popular with the locals that they called him “Uncle Sam.”
How Sam got the sobriquet is told in Mission to Turkey on
page 7.
FAMILY TREE. Sam, incidentally, is not the only Fox
to make a name for himself in Washington. He has two
well-known brothers. Morris is vice president of the
D. C. Transit Co., and Phil is athletic director of D. C.
Teachers’ College. a
TURKEYS AND “POMPIONS.” Just in time for Thanks
giving, Food Editor Violet Faulkner gives Mom some
helpful hints on how to prepare turkeys and pumpkin
pie, made from what the Pilgrims called “pompions.”
And for those who like to read little-known historic facts
and legends, she serves up some tasty morsels of infor
mation on Thanksgiving Day as a national holiday. You’ll
find it all in Thanksgiving Dinner on page 35.
REVERSE ENGLISH. While the rest of us will be cele
brating “Turkey Day,” a group of descendants of the
original band of Pilgrims-will not observe the traditional
feast. Who they are and why they—of all people—won’t
