From Soldier to Painter
ALBERTO DUCE, Spanish painter whose exhibi
tion of portraits of daughters of foreign
ambassadors will open this week in the I. F. A.
Galleries, has had a varied career, ranging from
soldier to businessman and painter.
Now art advisor to the Spanish Embassy, Mr.
Duce has collected a series of portraits for his

one-man show. The exhibition opens Tuesday and
will continue through December 8. It is being
sponsored by the Spanish Ambassador, Senor Don
Jose de Arellsa, Count of Motrico.
Among the portraits on display will be those of
Miss Ghida Shabandar, daughter of the Ambassador
of Iraq; Miss Swama Gunewardene, daughter of
the Ambassador of Ceylon; Mrs. Marla Teresa
Eberhart, daughter of Senor Dr. Don Hector David
Castro, Ambassador of El Salvador; Miss Marlene
Zephirin, daughter of the Ambassador of Haiti;
Senorita Helena Propper de Callejon, daughter of
the Spanish Ambassador to Canada; Miss Apama
Mehta, daughter of the Indian Ambassador, and
Mrs. Marjorie Coleman, daughter of Wilhelm
Munthe de Morgenstieme, Norwegian Ambassador.
Mr. Duce served as an officer in the Spanish
Foreign Legion from 1936 to 1939, and later received
art scholarships in Italy and France. In 1950, he
received a scholarship to study in this country.
Born in Saragosse, Spain, in 1916, Mr. Duce
studied business at the insistence of his family
before turning to an art career. He studied in
Spain under Eduardo Chicharro. He has won awards
for his painting in Italy and France, as well as in
his native land.
While at the Embassy here, Mr. Duce has
executed a ceiling mural depicting various phases
of life in Spain. He also has worked to encourage
an exchange of children's art among countries as
a step toward international understanding. One
of his latest portraits, of P. V. Cardan, retiring
director of the Foreign and Agricultural Organiza
tion of the United Nations, will hang in the U. N.
Building in New York.
