ON THE AIR A Brief Visit With a Wise Man By BERNIE HARRISON One of the very nicest things about Christmas on TV is the annual visit to "Meet the Press” of Robert Frost, 81, poet and man. At that cluttered point in the festive season when you seem to need him the most, there he is again, prodigal as ever, with his wondrous gifts of clarity and insight. Sunday’s all-too-brief session (WRC—4). was perhaps the most delightful yet. Plainly, NBC and Larry Spivak should And other occasions for his visits. Once a year may be enough for Santa; Mr. Frost should come more often. The four inquisitors (Spivak, Dave Brinkley, Clifton Fadiman and Inez Robb) amiably turned themselves into straight men and whisked around from the problems of poets to the state of the world today. Was the pace (pressures) too much for poets? No, he couldn’t answer that. He had never felt these pressures. When he got up In the morn ing, he explained, he made up his own bed. He lived alone, he Channel Chuckles p “Merry Christmas!” added. Then he made tip his mind. Poetry, he remarked, is a kind of fooling. He offered this coup let as illustration; "It takes a lot of in and out door schooling, "To get adapted to my kind of fooling.” Asked to evaluate his fellow poets. Frost declined. He’d leave that to T. S. Eliot, *he said kindly, who makes a living out of it. He was expounding wittily on this theme -when it became necessary for NBC to shift from Meet the Press to Roy Rogers. ** * * Faith: (Giant-sized.) Frost: offered this charming verse: "Oh God, if you’ll forgive us for the little jokes we play on You, We’ll forgive You for the one great joke You’ve played on us.” ** * * COMMENT: There would be fewer misunderstood artists, you sometimes feel, if they could! reach the public directly, with-: out the sometimes helpful but 1 too often misdirected explana-! tions and criticisms of the less gifted who stand between. ** * * Christmas Gift Dept: This next has nothing to do with TV or radio. It has everything to |do. however, with Christmas, and I couldn’t resist Including it in today’s column. The young can be wise, too. First, a letter arrived last week from 15-year-old Evelyn Kout- Isos, of Silver Spring, a sopho more at Northwood High and the oldest of five children.
