Line Asks Ruling On Mixed Buses TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Dec. 25 (4*). Tallahassee street buses are rolling again with Negroes as riders, but the status of seg regated seating remains in doubt. Boycotting Negroes climbed aboard buses yesterday for the first time in seven months, and sat where they pleased despite ;two incidents. The Tallahassee City Commis sion directed the Cities Transit Bus Co. to enforce racial seg regation, but lawyers for the commission Indicated uncertain ty as to what would happen in the next few days. The bus company said it would seek court determination of whether a Federal ruling that integrated Montgomery (Ala.) buses last week applied to its franchise and to Florida laws. Decision Awaited “We’re in hopes that pending ithis decision no one will try to precipitate anything,” said James E. Nesser, jr., attorney for the city commission. The Rev. C. K. Steele, presi dent of the Negro Inter-Civic Council which led the boycott as a protest against segregated seating, said his first reaction to the bus company's announce ment was that it “seems to be a rather prudent move.” “Momentarily, I think favor ably of it,” he said. Asked what would result if Negroes continued to ride in unsegregated fashion, both Mr. Nesser and Charles Audley, at torney for the bus company, said they did not know. Mr. Nesser said city police had been given no specific Instructions on the subject. Buses Carry Light Loads Negro leaders rode bus after bus yesterday, sitting where they chose. Most of the buses were lightly patronized with State capital offices and white and Negro universities closed for the holidays. . Two incidents were reported. Charles Carter, manager of the bus company, said he pulled a white photographer off one bus as the cameraman attempted to make pictures of Negroes seat ing themselves. The Rev. J. Meta Rollins, treasurer of the Inter-Civic Council, said he and Dan Speed, also a council officer, were asked by the driver to move to the rear of a bus they were riding. Mr. Rollins said he and Mr. Speed did not move and the driver made no further effort to make them leave their seats.
