That magic moment tomorrow night when the clock tolls 12 times, ringing in the New Year. . . . What do you plan to do? Likely, It you’re at a party, lights will go out. A fellow will kiss the nearest girl and hope to spread the good cheer to as many pretty girls as possible. Auld Lang Syne will be sung. And the spirit of the New Year will bubble ever brighter with each sip of champagne. This, in short, is our festive way of welcoming the New Year. Could there be any other way? How do other countries celebrate the witching hour? Let’s take a New Year’s look around the world. As the clock begins its methodical 12-count tomorrow night, here’s what merrymakers in other nations will be doing: In Spain (especially in Madrid), a man and woman will look into each other’s eyes. Each will hold 12 grapes. Both will eat a grape every time the clock strikes. As the last sound fades away, all their grapes must have been swallowed —to assure luck for the coming year. Spain’s younger set holds a New Year’s Eve Tertulia party. At 12 o’clock, boys and .girls will draw numbers from a basket. Those with matching numbers will be dancing partners for the evening. Some will carry the custom so far as to attend all of the yew’s social functions together. CONTINUED {cover story 5
