A-6 ** THE EVENING STAR, Washington, D. C. WEDNESDAY, JANL'ARY IS. 18.17 U. N. Chief Slaps Israel On Withdrawal Delay UNITED NATIONS. N. Y.. Jan. 16 (/P).—Secretary General 1 Dag Hammarskjold declared today the withdrawal of Israeli forces behind the 1949 armistice line is an essential step for restoring peace with Egypt. In a progress report to the General Assembly, Mr. Ham marskjold said he had held extensive but unsuccessful discussions with representatives of Israel “aiming at full compliance with the withdrawal requirements” laid down by the assembly last November. Israel Still Silent Israel, he said, still was silent “concerning compliance with the resolutions by withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza atrip.” This is one of the two areas which Israel said yesterday would still remain in its hands when a new phase of the with drawal from Egypt is completed January 22. The other area is Sharm El Sheikh on the Gulf of Aqaba. Mr. Hammarskjold said Israel had indicated the evacuation of the Aqaba strip is anticipated, although it had suggested fur ther talks with him on this problem. He indicated this in volved the question of guaran-! teeing free shipping through the Gulf of Aqaba, but he said he did not consider this question fell within the mandate given him by the Assembly. He released his report as the 27-natlpn Aslan-Arab bloc pre pared to lay before the Assembly a resolution condemning the pace of Israel’s withdrawal and calling for economic and finan cial restrictions against Israel. Falls on Egypt Side The Secreary General said the assembly’s November resolutions make “it clear that the with drawal of Israel forces must be behind the armistice line as it has been established in the Egypt-Israel agreement.” He added that the Gaza strip, “according to this agreement, falls on the Egyptian side of the armistice demarcation line” and First time shown here... S. Plan WARSAW, Jan. 16 (#).■—Po land and Communist China lined up together today with a Joint statement attacking United States policy in the Middle and Far East. Communist Chinese Premier Chou En-Lai and the reputedly independence-minded Warsaw regime called for “the strength ening of the solidarity of all countries of the socialist camp." The statement was signed at the end of a five-day visit by Premier Chou, Just before he flew off to Budapest for a one day visit to rebellion-tom Hun gary. He was to return to Mos cow tomorrow for a brief stop before going on to Afghanistan. In an obvious reference to the Eisenhower doctrine, the Chinese and Polish leaders charged that the United States is “trying by; means of economic, and military pressure ... to subjugate” the Middle East. “In the Far East,” the decla-; ration continued, “the United States is conducting a policy of military blocs which creates a threat to the national liberation interests of the peoples of this area.
