Sweeping Sport TIME WAS WHEN brooms were associated with witches, but nowadays you're more likely to And them wielded by showgirls, and not for housecleaning, either. Latest winter sport to originate in the Catskill Mountain resort area is broom ball, a kind of ice hockey with brooms replacing hockey sticks. A natural affinity between females and broom handles has resulted in most broom ball teams made up of shapely lasses. Like ice hockey, the new game is played on skates, and the girls need plenty of speed and maneuverability, since they wear no heavy protective clothing. Only the goalies wear regulation hockey gloves to guard their hands. A soccer ball is used, crisscrossed with strips of black tape so the players can see it against the white background of ice. The game is played in three periods of 10 minutes each, with 5-minute intervals for rest and « renewal of lipstick. These pictures show a game at Grossingers, N.
