HOLLYWOOD By SHEILAH GRAHAM Censorship at Cannes HOLLYWOOD (NANA).— Prom the Cannes Film Festival comes a strange story of unwar ranted censorship. “Something of Value," starring Rock Hud son, Dana Wynter and Wendy Hiller, was adjudged the best American film—prior to start of the festival. But, because of the white versus African native theme and with France having trouble in Algeria, not only was the picture condemned for the festival, but the French' govern ment has been urged to ban the movie in France and all French territory. Winston Churchill ap pears in the prologue for Euro pean viewers. I’m sorry they cut him from the United States ver sion. Winston surely would add “Something of Value.” Eva Marie Saint, restless for the theater, goes East in July for a month of summer stock. At the same time, she will make some personal appearances with her recently finished movie, "Hatful of Rain.” . . . When Linda Darnell and Robbie Rob ertson wed, a 16-year-old girl with bright red hair, and wear ing pedal-pushers, wandered into the reoeptlon at Barraclough’s. Linda’s agent. Bill Shiffrin, spotted the young lady, asked her name, and now Jill St. John, with measurements comparable to those of Monroe and Mans field, has a contract at U-I, and Is costarring there with John Saxon in “Summer Love.” coo* Clifton Webb tossed a swank soiree for “Boy on a Dolphin” costar Sophia Loren the other night, with the creme de la creme of Hollywood—the Clark Gables, Gary Coopers, etc., etc., etc.—attending. . . . Robert Stack, now on his second suspension at 20th-Fox, is asking out from his contract. I understand it was Ava Gardner who wouldn’t have him as her leading man in “The Sun Also Rises.” Ava has obviously been away from Hollywood too long, not to know that Robert is now one of our best and most highly rated actors. 00 0 0 Jayne Mansfield is dieting the hard way—no breakfast and less dinner. Jayne regretfully had to bypass being “Miss Energy of 1957” at the upcoming atomic meeting in Oklahoma City. She’s too busy working. Her next film: “The Story of Jean Harlow.” 00 0 0 During World War n, Brit ain’s Oen. Bernard Montgomery had a double, Corpl. M. E. James, who was used on several oc casions as a decoy for the enemy. He wrote a book, “I Was Monty’s Double,” and he will star in the movie version to be filmed by a British company. But first. Corporal James has a date to play Montgomery in Ray Mil land’s “High Flight” movie. 00 0 0 Jerry Lewis’ next movie. “Baby Doctor,” starts in September. “I have worked every day for the past nine months,” said Jerry, on the final day of “Sad Sack” shooting. "I need a rest.” He’ll take three days off. Jerry invited me to the Palm Springs premiere of his “Delicate Delinquent,” a couple of weeks hence. “I’m very proud of that.” he said, pointing to his producer title on the credit sheet. Temed Harmful to Bill “These are the type of things that hurt when it comes to con sidering appropriations for any program,” said Senator Bridges, senior Republican on the Ap propriations Committee. Senator Lyndon B. Johnson, Democrat of Texas, said he had received a copy of the letter in connection with Appropriations Subcommittee hearings he is conducting on State Department and USIA funds. The USIA said it was respon sible for "co-ordinating activi ties and operations” under the special international program, but that the State Department had “operating rebponslbllity” for selecting and sending abroad 8$ cultural and 19 athletic tours. Senator Johnson indicated he shared Senator Bridges' lack of enthusiasm for the Gillespie tour. Made More Than President “They paid his outfit more per week than the President of) the United States gets,” Senator Johnson commented. In a letter, the Btate Depart ment said Mr. Gillespie's "nor-1 mal fee” for his band of 16 musicians, two vocalists and baggage hand ranges from SB,OOO to SIO,OOO a week.
