** THE EVENING STAR. Washington, D. C. MONDAY, NOVEMBER «, Its? B-8 THE PASSING SHOW Well, It Is Better Than Presley's First Two By HARRY MaeARTKI R For the record it should be noted that the third motion picture perpetrated In honor of a backwoods balladeer named Elvis Presley arrived in town over the week end. It is called 1 "Jailhouse Rock," it is at Loew's Capitol Theater and evaluation of it should not detain us long today. » For the idolators of this phenomenon are not interested in the carping cries of any aged critics beyond wishing that the aged critics would not be so nasty to this sweet boy Others, of more mature turn, will consider it sufficient warn ing to be told where “Jailhouse Rock” is .to be avoided. These latter do not need all the sor did details. Still there 'are a few note worthy aspects. of “Jailhouse Rock” that should be rec ognized in passing. It is, for in stance, a motion picture which lives up to its advertising, or at least to that portion of its advertising-describing it as the best Presley picture yet. This, of course, is like saying it is much more fun to be hit on the head with a 10-round mal let than with a 20-pound mal let. This one is not as dreadful as the first two were. ** * * Another surprising thing about “Jailhouse Rock" is that it comes to us under the au spices of Metro - Goldwyn - Mayer, a studio that once con sidered “Andy Hardy” fitting entertainment for the young. The famed MOM trademark, incidentally, was greeted with some screaming the other afternoon, indicating that some near - sighted bobby - soxers though Elvis was already on. This quickly subsided, however, when Leo the Lion turned out to be growling on key. The film in fact, bears not only the MGM trademark but a pair of credits listing its pro ducer as Pandro S. Berman and its director as Richard Thorpe. Mr. Thorpe’s direction is one of the reason’s why this stacks up as superior to the two earlier Presley pictures but his and Mr Berman's are strange names to see attached to one of these rock-and-roll things. (Mr. Berman now is engaged in making “The Brothers Kar amazov," which is about, as violent a reaction as you will soon see.* ** * * The Presley fans, if any are still with us. also should be warned about "Jailhouse Rock." Elvis is subjected to a prison barber’s shears before the first reel of this affair is barely warmed up. He plays a young man convicted of manslaughter after a barroom brawl, but he does not stay imprisoned or shorn very long. In no time at all he is full thatched and pushing the likes of the late Judy Tyler and Mickey Shaughnessy around as he fights his way to stardom as a singer. That brief sight of him with his ears laid bare to the breeze may have a trfumatic effect, though, on some of the more impressionable Presleteers. One more item for benefit of his fans and the record. Elvis sings, or whatever that is, six WHERE AND WHEN Current Theater Attractions and Time of Showing Stage Arena—Dark. “The Doctor's Dilemma" resumes tomorrow. He’ll be there, ap pearing twice nightly, through Wednesday night and it is a distinct pleasure to have him around, even if only this briefly. Mr. Haymes is a young man who has had his up and downs in private life, but his public personality is a sunny one. The ; baritone voice is in .fine timbre, his arrangements are good, his manner is easy and his delivery 1 is that of a man with respect \ for both lyrics and melody. He starts out with solid ren , dition of one that was old but good when we all were younger, “Lonesome and Sorry " From : that he goes into “Life Is Just ’ a Bowl of Cherries,” which turns out to be a medley includ ing “Isn’t It a Lovely Day” and ’ “Back in Your Own Backyard.” He turns to newer fare to sing “Our Love Affair.” then gives slick polish to a fine Gershwin medley from “’S Wonderful" ; to “They Can’t Take That Away From Me.” He answers a request with “Little White Lies." winds up with aTousing "Carioca" and, in Variety’s phrase of praise, has to beg off. You'll enjoy every minute of the Haymes performance.
