June 14 (Special).—The Uni versity of Virginia’* monthly humor magazine, Virginia Spectator, has been put out of business by the executive com mittee of the university’s gov erning board, which had re-, ceived complaints of obscenity In the publication. In a special session last night, the three-man executive mux mlttee of the Board of Visitors | accepted and put into effect I the recommendations of a board committee which has been studying student publlca i ttons. In addition to termination of the Spectator, the recom mendations included the crea | tion of a board of directors, composed of student vice presi dents of each of the university’s schools, to supervise the stu dent newspaper, Cavalier Daily The executive committee re solved that "further publica tion of the Virginia Spectator, in the best Interests ol the : university, shall be discon tinued.” It added: “Further publication of any Builder Hacks Wife, Kills Self William J. Wire, 87, a re tired Washington building con’- I tractor, hanged himself Friday 1 night in Miami, Fla., after ap parently trying to hack his wife to death with a hatchet. His wife, Mrs. Ella Reid Wire, also 87. was in critical con dition last night in Jackson i Memorial Hospital, Miami, with multiple scalp wounds and a deep stab in the neck. The Miami Public Safety Of fice said Mr. Wire apparently . . . IM- UU . k.k attacked his wife with a hat chet, left her for dead on her bed. wrote two suicide notes and then hanged himself with a window sash cord in the ga rage of their home. The couple lived in Miami Shores, an exclusive community lust north of Miami. Mr. Wire was the uncle ot the late Preston Wire, well known Washington builder, who constructed the Wire Building at Vermont avenue and K street N.W., and of C. Ray i mond Wire, 3911 Bradley lane. Chevy Chase, socially promi nent investor. A neighbor and long-time friend of the Wires in Miami Shores. H. W. Carter, found Mrs. Wire early yesterday. He called police, who discovered humor publication under the j sponsorship of the University | of Virginia or any student or ganization of the university shall be permitted only with the consent and approval of the president of the university or administrative authorities dele gated by him under such con- j dltions and sponsorship as they j shall deem proper in the inter ests of the university.” The mid-winter issue of the Spectator came under fire from : the university administration after a faculty member com plained to University President . Colgate W. Darden, jr.. that It; ; contained obscene jokes. A faculty investigating com mittee appointed by Dr. Darden \ reported that the magazine was ■ , a discredit to the university. . The committee also criticized issues of the Cavalier Daily . which were harshly critical of . Dr. Darden's investigation of , the Spectator. s The new board-of directors - will meet at least once a month to review operations of the j j Cavalier Daily. | Mr. Wire’s body in the garage. Chief Stuart Senneff of | Miami Shores police said Mr. Wire apparently left his wife lying on the bed and that she then struggled into the living room and collapsed in a chair. The police said Mr. Wire left two notes, one addressed to Mr. Carter. He said both indi cated Mr. Wire had been de spondent over the ill health both of himself and of his wife. One of the notes left instruc tions that the bodies be sent to Washington for funeral services and burial. Mr. Wire had retired some 20 years ago, and the couple moved from Washington to Miami about 12 years ago. They had no children. Mr. Wire is survived by two sisters in Washington, Mrs. Marian Bassford, 7500 Wild wood avenue, Takoma Park, and Mrs. Nellie Talbott, 1452 Kanawha street, Langley Park. A native of Frederick Coun ty. Md, Mr. Wire worked for the Baltimore & Ohio Rail road in Washington before go ing into the home building business. The Wires lived in Chevy Chase and later in Green Meadows, Md., near Four Corners. Baptists Debate Valley Forge Site Headquarters CINCINNATI, June 14 UP). —The annual meeting of the American Baptist convention debated late today whether historic Valley Forge, Pa., should become the site of its i national headquarters. Earlier, delegates rejected a proposal that the home office of the denomination be located in Chicago. Earlier too. New York City had failed to regis ter the necessary 55 per cent approval of delegates who are here from 35 States, Hawaii and Alaska. Valley Forge, where the Bap : tists own a 27-acre tract of ; land, was proposed by the Rev. , Dr. Glen Asquith, a delegate from Lowell. Mass.
