"Women today In business have proved themselves suc cesses. They know better not to compete with men. They know that a woman's think ing la different from a man's and the male business world Is aware that a woman's thinking la just as good as a man's In a great many oases.” says Anita Colby. Then, too. there's Marian Donovan who puts snaps on diapers and came up with the "Boater" design for which qfie Just sold the patent for over a million dollars. These women weren't content with Just an Idea. They soared to the top with K. In her new and revised edition of "Anita Colby's Beauty Book" by Prentice- Hall. she has devoted a chapter to the some 38 mil lion career women In the United States. Different Pattern Women who work today sometimes follow a different pattern than the career girl of the 30s. Then stage plays, movies, radio and around the-table family discussions revolved around "Would Susie work after marriage?” “Will Jane marry John and give up that penthouse on Fifth Avenue that she worked ! so hard to get on her own and live In a one-room effici ency?” "No daughter of mine works at Saks Fifth Avenue” the financier father who 'til then paid all her bills at the store might have said. Other women, having paved the way for the young women of today In getting any number of exciting and glamorous jobs, look on the new generation of young women with a strange mix ture of admiration and puz zlement. Coming out of colleges they get jobs, may marry Immediately, If not married before they’re out of college, quit <he Job after baby comes, they go back to work several years later. The difficulty Is that then they are out of the direct flow of people for the top because they've been out of the run ning. Visits Virginia In many cases, too. they’ve lpst their Initiative and don’t aim for the top because they want a 0-to-B job without any responsibility. Says Anita Colby, who Is unmar maried, these women don't realize that It's easier on top, there are longer vacations, beter pay, and frequently there are people to whom you can delegate work.
