Ark., Sept. S <AP).—A group of about SO segregationist white students apparently succeeded today In keeping Negroes out of integrated Van Buren High School. But they failed in their boast that nundreds of other white students would Join them In their boycott, which started yes terday. One striker had said last night, “You’ll see very few white kids In there 1 the school> tomorrow.’** Newsmen watching all three entrances to the 600-pupll high school did not see any of the 13 Negro students arrive at class time, 8 a.m. <CST>. Later, re porters who were permitted In side the 2-story, red brick build ing. found only white students in the classrooms. The leaders of the student strike stationed themselves across the street from the high school and called to other stu dents to join them as they ar rived for class. Girls Joined Strikers A sprinkling of girls joined the striking group.' Loud cheers went up as a student left the school ground to join them. But a huge majority of Van Buren High's students attended class as usual. One school official said “those are nice kids,” referring to the students who filed into the building hurriedly when the first buzzer sounded. Nodding toward the strikers, he said, “It’s the few out there that get the publicity.” The official estimated that only about 35 of the striking group actually were enrolled in the high school. A spokesman for the parents of the Negro students said a meeting would be held over the week end to decide what to do. One parent was quoted as say ing his child would never return to Van Buren High under con ditions such as exist today. As the boycotting white stu dents milled about this morn ing. a number of white adults watched quietly from automo biles and street corners. Effigy Burned The rebellious white youths; burned a Negro in effigy on the campus last night. Several boasted that their parents were behind them and had given them permission to strike. Parents of most of the youths! held a meeting last night. The! mothers and fathers appointed j a committee to look into whati they termed their “legal rights.” 1 Van Buren, a West Arkansas I city of 6.000, integrated its high school under a Federal court order in September, 1957. Thirteen Negroes are enrolled. There were no reports of violence last year but resist ance to Integration exploded when the 1958-59 fall term started Tuesday. Some of the Negroes walked out Wednesday and said later that white classmates had threatened to get them after school. Md.. Sept. 5 <AP».—The 1958 Maryland State Fair begina folding up today and after tomorrow will be limited to horse and pony events and horse racing. Cattle, livestock and other exhibits start to move out of the fairgrounds today. Tomor. row night, midway concession aires pack up their tents and rides and move on. The last grandstand show will be to morrow night. The exhibition hall closes the same night. for hours yesterday said the group would return every day for six days until the Negroes were removed. "At the end of those six days, if the Negroes are not out. then we will put them out for good,” he said. , Kentucky School Enrolls Negroes I HOPKINSVILLE, Ky.. Sept. 1 5 < AP) .—Three Negroes en ; rolled without Incident yester day at two elementary schools, the first to do so since a grad ual integration program started here in September, 1956. Other colored students, who make up 30 per cent of this Southwestern Kentucky town’s 3.300 total enrollment, returned to their own schools. The city’s integration pro gram opened the first grade to Negroes in 1956, with an extra grade being desegregated each year. The program permtis pupils in grades being Integrated to attend any school in the area in which they reside. They also can attend another school of their choice, unle’ks prohibited by the school superintendent. THE EVENING STAR. Washington, D. C. raiDAY. xrrTKMBeB s. isas British Attack Negro's Home LONDON, Sept. 5 (AP),— Race rioters hurled gasoline bombs into a Negro's house last night, then besieged two police men who dashed in to put'but | the blaze. The house in Paddington, an area adjoining London's racial storm center of Notting Hill, had been bombarded with milk bottles and garbage earlier in the day. The mob gathered quietly shortly before midnight. The [occupants, a 27-year-old Ja matcan and his wife, were not at home. Neighbors on either side were quietly told to mova out. 1 The door of the target house was broken down and bomba were hurled into the hallway. Two policemen dashed in and threw one bomb back into tha street. It burned two girls la the crowd. Then the mob—mostly teen agers—turned on the pollSfc. They dashed back into the house and barricaded them | selves against a barrage of stones and bottles. Fire engines and police re ; inforcements turned up to rescue them.
