Save Dummy Trumps
To. Ruff Losers
In the days of whist, a hun
dred years ago, It was said that
a hundred thousand men were
walking the streets of London
because they had forgotten to
draw trumps. Today the shoe
Is on the other foot; the easiest
way to go broke Is to draw
trumps when you shouldn’t.

South trumped the first heart,
drew three rounds of trumps
and led out the ace and king
of clubs.
That was the end if him
South had to lose two clubs and
one of his low spades. He could
trump one spade with dummy's
last trump, but the last spade
was a sure loser.
"Hard luck," said South
mournfully.
He was partly right. It was
hard luck that East had the
ace of hearts, that the clubs
broke badly, that East had the
club length rather than West,
and that the trumps were 3-1
rather than 2-2. But South
should have made his contract
despite all these bad breaks.
Low Spades Are Problem
South’s low spades are the
1 problem. Two of them will fall
on dummy’s ace and king. What
about the other two? South
cah’t pickle them and the op
ponents won't let him eat them.
The best way out is to ruff them
with dummy’s trumps.
After trumping the opening
I heart lead. South should draw
only one round Os trumps. The
'next step Is to cash dummy’s
top spades. Then South gets
to his hand by leading a trump
to the king.
At this moment South has
drawn two trumps. This is
enough. Dummy's two remain
ing trumps are needed, so de
clarer must leave West's last
trump out.
South leads a low spade and
ruffs it in dummy. He gets to
his hand with the ace of clubs
! and leads his last spade.
What can West do? If he
ruffs dummy will discard a club
and South will eventually ruff a
'club in dunfmy instead of a
spade. If West discards instead
of ruffing dummy will ruff the
spade and South will get back
by ruffing a heart and will then
idraw West’s last trump.
Either way South is sure to
jwin 11 tricks.
There’s a moral In this sad
tale. If dummy’s trumps must
be used for ruffing, do the ruff
ing first and draw trumps later.
