The next time you play bridge take a good look at your oppo nents. The best you can say for them Is that they're human beings. Give them every chance to act like the poor things that they are. Suppose you’re playing to day’s hand at three no-trump. You win the first trick In dummy with the ten of hearts. After counting tricks you de cide to go after the diamonds How do you carry out this plan? One way Is to take all the burden on your own shoulders. You get to your hand with the ace of spades and lead a dia mond toward dummy. West plays low and your first problem is whether to play the king or the ten of diamonds. The normal finesse of the ten lands you right In the soup East takes the queen of dia monds and returns a heart, clearing West’s long suit while he still has the ace of diamonds It doesn’t do you much good j to guess right. Even if you win i the first diamond with dummy’s . king, East will win the next ! with the queen. East will ] promptly lead a heart, and ' down you’ll go. Trade «n Ignorance The right line of play Is to trade on East’s ignorancg. After winning the first trick in dummy with the ten of hearts, lead a low diamond from the dummy! East cannot know the dia mond situation. He will surely play a low diamond unless he ! has both the ace and the queen <in which case you are out of luck no matter what you do'. After East plays a low diamond, you play the nine ( or the Jack, forcing West to win the first diamond trick. West cannot afford to lead another heart. No matter what else he leads you can win and knock out the other top dia mond. You can well afTord to lose two diamonds, provided that you lose the first of them to West. As the cards He you would actually lose only one diamond trick. On the first round of the suit West would take the ace. This would tell you who had the queen of diamonds, and you would drop it under dummy’s king the next time you had the chance. What If East brilliantly plays the queen of diamonds at the second trick? If he does stop playing against that East. He isn't human! • Daily Question Partner bids one no-trump and you hold: *K763 t?K 9 6 2 CKIO2 *J 10 What do you bid? Answer: Two clubs. This has nothing to do with clubs, but merely asks partner to bid a major suit if he can. 'Copyright. 1958. Oen. Features Corp.)
