meNTIC VOTING Thursday Is Deadline For New Jerseyites Anyone who wants to register to vote in New Jersey’s general election November 4 must meet requirements by September 25 (Thursday). Registration In New Jersey Is In person only and Is perm anent unless the elector falls to vote at least once every four years. It Is accomplished through a County or Municipal Clerk (Commissioner of Regis tration in Essex and Hudson Counties). Other absentee voting In formation on New Jersey, New Mexico. New York. North Caro lina and North Dakota follows: NEW JERSEY To be elected—Senator. 14 Representatives, other officials. Residence requirements— State six months, county and precinct 60 days Absentee voting Write county clerk for ballot before October 27. giving kind and date of election, your New Jer sey address, reason for absence, and address to which ballot must be sent. Sign letter as you signed registration card. Allow time for processing application. Voted ballot due back before polls close at 8 p.m. election day. NEW MEXICO To be elected—Senator, two Representatives, Governor, 66 State Legislators, other officials. Resident requirements—State one year, county 90 days, pre cinct 30 days. Registration—ln person or by mail, and permanent unless elector failed to vote in previous two general elections. Write county clerk for Affidavit of Registration before October 6. when registration must be com pleted. Absentee voting—Only those covered by Federal Voting As sistant Act are eligible, and these may vote solely for Fed eral office-seekers. However, this State is voting November 4 on amendment to permit full absentee voting. NEW YORK To be elected—Senator, 43 Representatives, Governor, 208 State Legislators and other officials. Residence requirments—State one year, localities 30 days. Registration—ln person or by mail, and permanent in New York City and the Counties of Broome, Chemung, Erie, Monroe, Nassau, Onondaga, Putnam, Schenectady. Suffolk, Tompkins and Westchester—if the elector votes at least once every two years. In other counties registration is required each election year except in communities under 5,000 where it is permanent if elector votes at least once in each of four successive years. Registration by mail is per missible for those whose occu pations or duties take them out of state and for the ill or dis abled. Write Board of Elections in your county seat (or in your city’borough) requesting both your Registration Affidavit and the Application for an Absentee Voters Ballot. GM r Chrysler Talks Resume DETROIT, Sept. 22 (AP).— General Motors and Chrysler, both strike targets for the United Auto Workers Union, re sumed bargaining with the UAW today in efforts to reach new contracts and head off any walkouts. UAW President Walter Reu ther, who was scheduled to re turn to the bargaining table with Chrysler, remained at his office today while aides met with Chrysler. Mr. Reuther was reported working over language of a couple of clauses the union will propose to Chrysler. Counter-Offers Planned UAW officials expressed con fidence Saturday that negotia tions with Chrysler could result in a contract by tonight. They were not so optimistic today, and Doug Fraser of the UAW’s Chrysler negotiating team told newsmen: "I’m not that opti mistic now. GM and Chrysler offered to the UAW Saturday three-year contracts almost identical to the one which Ford and the UAW agreed on Wednesday after the' UAW staged a six hour strike of 98.000 Ford work ers to emphasize its demand. Mr. Reuther said he would not accept from GM or Chrysler a carbon copy of the Ford set tlement, but he indicated the ofler made Saturday supplied a basis from which to work for ultimate settlement. Sept. 30 Deadline The UAW has an 11 am. September 30 strike deadline at GM if no contract agreement is reached. Mr. Reuther and other top officers of the UAW have been given authority by the union to call a Chrysler strike whenever they feel it necessary. Mr. Reuther’s comment to ; newsmen indicated he thought it would be easier for the UAW , to reach agreement with Chrys i ler and he took command of I the union's bargaining team with that company Saturday. But it was plain to see he differed with them about daughter Margaret’s acting ability. After seeing Margaret as the lead in “Autumn Crocus’’ the former President said she was wonderful in the part. Chicago critics in general panned the show and Miss Truman. A reporter set the stage for a Truman counterpunch when he asked about the critics’ reviews.
