The program was filmed there in its entirety. on thc m A Stunning Video Portrait of E11a... By BERNIE HARRISON Star TV Critic, The paintings by such celebrated artists as Vlaminck, Dufy and Utrillo proved disappointing in their color projection Wednesday on the Milton Berle show—but a portrait “painted" by producer Hal Ranter’s technicians of Ella Fitsgerald in a deep red dress by a vase of yellow and brown chrysanthemums was worth hanging at the National Gallery. Maybe that was Ranter’s point anyhow In setting up the little art exhibit to go withs Ella’s singing. 1 Kanter superimpose* Ella, at j. a table, into one of Utrillo’s street scenes, an effect that 1 seemed hardly worth the effort. [ When he forgot Uhe painting ‘ and moved in for that taste- 3 fully framed portrait of Ella ! singing “It Might as Well Be j Spring,” the result was lyrical- 1 ly classical. Let Raoul Kanter ( take a bow. 1 If Miss Fitzgerald should ever commission a portrait of her self, incidentally, this is the way it should be posed. 4* * * The national Nielsen ratings for November show Wagon Train nosing out Gunsmoke for the No.' 1 spot and if you’ve been watching the Wednesday night NBC—4 series lately, its lofty ranking should come as no surprise. The last program for example, ’ starring that admirable Japa nese actor, Seasue Hayakawa, was a thriller even if the story more accurately belonged In the historical fantasy class. It was a “different kind of Western” all right, yet Hayakawa’s per " formance, even when con fronted by an incredible Indian “savage,” made you forget the . plot’s wild improbabilities. The top 10. Incidentally, shows Cheyenne as No. 9—and that’s not exactly the best news ' for holdout Clint Walker. ** * * The Week-End Wash: " Arthur Godfrey will have a “secret” for the I’ve Got a Se cret panel next Wednesday. - Jackie Gleason’s main skit to . night will offer a farcial ap proach to the gift-wrapping asDects of the season. (Color.) 8 pjn., t WRC—4. Walt Disney Presents—" The Shot That Was Heard ’Round the World’.” The second half of Disney’s colorful tale of the start of the American Revolution Is a rehash of a recent Disney feature. It’s a must for the youngsters, and adults should find It satisfying entertainment. This chapter is based on the premise that nobody even knows which side fired the “shot heard round the world,” and depicts the immediate events leading up to that historic moment. Jeff York, as James Otis, delivers a fine speech on the meaning of the Revolution. How about a TV series on the Revolution, Mr. Disney? 8 p.m., WMAlr—7. Phil Silvers—The first 10 minutes of this show is superb. When Ernie goes to see an old theatrical-agent buddy about getting a big-name show on a budget of $23, and the agent gives him Frank Sinatra, Kim Novak and the McGuire Sisters, It’s topnotch comedy. When he tries to break up the McGuire Sisters in the second half the show is still amusing, but routine. Clever surprise at the end. 9 p.m., WTOP—9. M Squad—“ Hie Executioner.” One of the very best of the series. A waiter inadvertently sees some stolen jewelry changing hands, and from that moment on his life is In danger. Plenty of thrills as the police try to outwit a diabolically shrewd killer. Only one complaint: How does a viewer know what to believe In any more? Herschel Bernardi, who does such a fine job as the sympathetic police lieutenant on “Peter Gunn,” does an equally good job tonight as the killer. Nan Leslie, who doesn’t appear on “Gunn,” should. She plays one of gangland’s most attractive go-betweens. 9 .m., WRC—4. . 77 Sunset Strip—“ The Iron Curtain Caper.” Fairly enter taining mystery. Private Eye Bailey (Efrem Zimbalist, Jr.) goes to East Berlin to bring back a captured American reporter.
