It’s the wackiest movie scene of 1959 Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon,
Tony Curtis and a whole all-girl orchestra in one Pullman bunk
The zany scene above, from the movie “Some Like It
Hot,” knocks into a cocked hat the scientific principle
that two (or more) bodies can’t occupy the same space
at the same time. That’s an all-girl orchestra, and
Marilyn Monroe, having a party in Upper Eight. But
two of the “girls” who finally get into the act are boys.
In the film, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis are sole
witnesses to a gangland massacre in Chicago. To escape
the killers who want to silence them, the boys put on
female disguise and join the all-girl orchestra of “Sweet
Sue and her Society Syncopators,” which has Marilyn
as a vocalist.
Thinking Jack is a girl, Marilyn suggests they have
a friendly drink together and soon everyone is joining
in. The madcap party alone took five days to film.
“You have to be orderly to shoot disorder,” said
director-writer Billy Wilder. “This was the best dis
